Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Manchester United have held talks with Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian has emerged as one of the club’s top targets ahead of the summer transfer window.

Recent reports claimed that Casemiro had advised United to make a move for Guimaraes. The 32-year-old is set to leave Old Trafford in June and put forward the Magpies man as a possible midfield reinforcement.

There have been suggestions in Brazil that talks between the club and the player are “advanced.” He has just over two years on his contract at St James’ Park.

Romano confirms Guimaraes talks

While Romano didn’t go as far as to claim that discussions were advanced, he did confirm that contact had indeed been made. He said on his YouTube channel:

“What I can confirm is that a meeting took place in recent weeks. It already took place a few weeks ago between the agents of Bruno Guimaraes and Manchester United. It’s true the information from Brazil, a meeting took place, and Manchester United maintain a very good relationship with the agency. Bruno is represented by one of the biggest agencies in the world, so it’s normal to have meetings with top agents for top clubs. “

Romano added:

“Then from that to meeting and reaching an agreement on personal terms, meeting and going to sign a player in the summer. Bruno Guimaraes is appreciated by Manchester United, yes, but also other players are in the list.”

The Italian journalist suggested the Red Devils aren’t fully set on Guimaraes and are still weighing up other midfield targets:

“Elliot Anderson, who is also a topic at Manchester City. So there are still many things to qualify before Manchester United decides, ‘Okay, this is the midfielder we want to get.’ But at the moment, the situation with Bruno Guimaraes remains about meeting, yes, interest, yes, but for Newcastle, he’s a crucial player. Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, Newcastle won’t make life easy for interested clubs.”

Guimaraes has been one of Newcastle’s top performers ever since arriving on Tyneside in early 2022. He can operate as a defensive or central midfielder.

Go get Guimaraes

The Brazilian undoubtedly ticks a lot of boxes for Manchester United, including having the profile to replace Casemiro. He’s superb on the ball, dictating the play, and defensively, he is a workhorse with tons of energy.

It’s still early days, and there’s no guarantee that the 28-year-old will be arriving at Old Trafford. But the fact that INEOS have clearly made contact with his representatives suggests he is one of the favourites to be part of the club’s midfield overhaul.

The only issue in a potential deal for Guimaraes are on the financial side. Paying an astronomical fee for a player nearing his thirties can be a risk, although Casemiro was 30 when he arrived from Real Madrid for £70m in the summer of 2022.
