  • Barcelona have a £26m (30m euros) option to buy
  • United are unwilling to negotiate ‘flexible’ terms
  • Michael Carrick would like Rashford back at Old Trafford

The saga around Marcus Rashford’s permanent move from Manchester United to Barcelona remains in limbo. The Catalans have a £26m option to buy clause at the end of his current loan deal with the club.

According to Sport, Manchester United are not willing to sanction a further loan with Barcelona for Rashford, or make the ‘purchase option more flexible’.

The Catalan club has a storied history with Financial Fair Play rules, using levies to register key signings in the past few seasons.

Barcelona keen on signing Rashford

President Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco are keen on signing the England international but would prefer a lower price or a different payment structure. There is a sense of stability with head coach Hansi Flick, who stated that the Barca job would be his last managerial role.

Flick, being a fan of Rashford, quashes any worries about dynamics changing if the player were to sign permanently. The United loanee has 10 goals and 13 assists in 38 matches across all competitions for the La Liga side so far this season.

Rashford has performed better in the Champions League this season, averaging a goal every 97 minutes. His side are through to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Barcelona feel that in the summer window, they need to prioritise the number nine and centre-back positions. Whilst Rashford does have the capabilities to play as a striker, Flick has preferred to play him on the wing. The United man did start his season in Spain as a 9, but the experiment initially failed.

Ball is in United’s court

Despite Barcelona having the option to trigger Rashford’s purchase at such a low price, the power seems to be in United’s hands.

Although Rashford prefers to stay at Spotify Camp Nou, United would be happy to walk away if the current clause is not met. This would be down to the player’s resurging form in 2025/26, which will bring more suitors into the conversation in the summer. It would subsequently raise the asking price for Rashford and bring a bigger profit margin.

Alternatively, Rashford could return to United. Albeit, his gametime would be limited with Bryan Mbuemo, Matheus Cunha and Amad all capable of playing down the flanks. Interim manager Michael Carrick is keen on seeing Rashford back at the club, but would this be purely sentimental?

The relationship between Rashford and United has broken down since he was loaned to Aston Villa. He has publicly voiced his willingness to stay in Catalonia, and his love for the club.

Unlike the microscope of Old Trafford and the British media, Rashford told BBC Sport in December that he ‘feels at home’ at Barcelona. He added: “I don’t see anything here as like a pressure. It’s just, I’m here to play football.”

Recently, he has not been playing too much football. Since the end of January, he has only seen 146 minutes of La Liga football. With all of Lamina Yamal, Fermin Lopez and Raphinha available, the latter has been preferred at left wing.

It might be so that under these more challenging circumstances, Rashford may end up wanting to return to England and seek a move elsewhere. For the time being, Rashford wants Barcelona and Barcelona want Rashford. Whilst that remains, the ball stays in United’s court.
