Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has a significant summer transfer window ahead. The interim coach has been advised to make four key signings, along with a homegrown talent joining the pre-season squad.

That’s if Carrick remains in charge amid uncertainty over his future in the Old Trafford dugout. His contract expires in June, but all signs point to INEOS keeping him in charge permanently.

The Red Devils have enjoyed a resurgent spell under the new interim boss, and in the last 10 Premier League fixtures, United have won seven, drawn two, and lost one. This remarkable period has his side sitting third in the Premier League table, with Champions League qualification in their hands.

European football would allow the club to start planning for the future and targeting top talent. Attracting high-profile names across the continent would be a key to building a stronger squad for next season, as the campaign comes to a close.

Ferdinand’s transfer list for Carrick

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes the upcoming transfer window is defining for the next season. His demands are four key significant signings in three positions. However, these roles are crucial for the buildup play, which includes a striker, a full-back, and two midfielders.

Ferdinand doesn’t insist on a complete rebuild but a “realistic” approach towards a focused upgrade. Moreover, it will be very helpful in squad rotation, adding more options in attack, midfield, and defence.

The iconic former centre-back said on his YouTube channel:

“If United go and get four players in the next window and two of those are starters, then I think that’s a realistic transfer window. If I was the club, my priorities would be two central midfielders, one who starts and maybe a younger one who you can blood in here and there around Bruno [Fernandes], Kobbie [Mainoo], and the one you bring in.”

Ferdinand further explained:

“I would also go for another forward, a younger one who is going to be more of a back-up to what we’ve already got. And I would go for a full-back. That’s it. I know you can say you want 10 new players and most positions can be improved, but I don’t think you need a huge revamp, it’s still a lot, but that’s realistic.”

Ferdinand was part of the last team that tasted Premier League victory under Sir Alex Ferguson. These new additions could truly help turn Old Trafford into the Theatre of Dreams if things go as planned.

The current squad and the Academy

All eyes will be on building more muscle for Manchester United. Many players’ futures are uncertain, but Kobbie Mainoo’s long-term deal is in its final stages.

There are doubts surrounding players on the outskirts of regular football, including Mason Mount, linked with Aston Villa, and Manuel Ugarte, linked with Serie A. Additionally, Casemiro has decided to leave the club at the end of the season.

Manchester United have a new prospect, JJ Gabriel. The 15-year-old is one of the most exciting players in the nation. Gabriel was phenomenal in the United U18’s campaign. The youngster’s addition to the pre-season squad could be a defined route for future graduates to join the first team.
