Mason Mount could be headed for the exit door at Manchester United this summer. The English midfielder has endured an injury-ridden spell at Old Trafford since arriving from Chelsea in July 2023.
United paid £60m to sign Mount, and the decision drew raised eyebrows for several reasons. Erik ten Hag, who was in charge at the time, already had Bruno Fernandes playing in the Englishman’s preferred attacking midfield role.
Mount was also coming off a dissapointing season with Chelsea, struggling to impress and as a result bidding farewell to his boyhood club. His performances haven’t been the issue for the Reds, more so his recurring injury troubles.
The 27-year-old has made 19 appearances across competitions this season but is currently sitting on the sidelines. He last featured in a 2-0 win over Manchester City in mid-January, and his fitness is a massive concern.
Manchester United to offload Mount
Mount has just over two years on his contract, but might be on the move this summer. A report from Football Insider claims that Manchester United are prepared to accept offers for the player.
The Reds no longer see him as part of their long-term plans, which will be handled by either Michael Carrick or a new permanent manager. He wasn’t a starter in Carrick’s first two games in charge, sitting on the bench in a 3-2 victory against Arsenal at the Emirates.

Mount won’t be short of suitors, and Aston Villa might be attentive to his situation as they previously showed interest in the former Chelsea star. A potential return to London with Fulham is another possibility.
There’s no word on how much United will be demanding for Mount. Given his injury problems, they will struggle to make anything close to the money spent on him three summers ago.
Mounting problems
Mount is a great talent, whose mentality can’t be faulted. A proper team player and a positive character in the dressing room. He has come up with important moments, including his winner in a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in November.
That said, availability is the best ability, and unfortunately, he has spent most of his Old Trafford career watching on from the sidelines. He has missed 55 games due to various injuries, including a hamstring injury, which ruled him out of 20 games in the 2024-25 campaign (per Transfermarkt).
Carrick was asked about Mount given the change in system, doesn’t give him much hope of a starting role:
“Mason [Mount] is a super player and we’re looking forward to getting him back. He will be a very important player for us.”
Mount was a Ruben Amorim favourite, and the Portuguese coach took to the Englishman’s dedication and versatility. He might well be ruing Amorim’s sacking, and he might soon be following him out of the door.
