Manchester United Want to Beat Chelsea to Tottenham Star

  • Gray has been silver lining in dismal Spurs season

Manchester United are reportedly set to rival Chelsea for the signing of Tottenham Hotspur star Archie Gray.

TEAMtalk reports that United have a genuine interest in the former Leeds United graduate. Gray has made 32 appearances for Spurs this season.

The English starlet has been the ultimate utility player, being used in several positions. When called upon, he has played at centre-back, left-back, right-back, right midfield and his preferred central midfield position.

Gray Shines For Spurs

The young midfielder has started every game under interim boss Igor Tudor, and has shone brightly despite the dismal run that Spurs have been on. The North London outfit currently sit in 17th position, which is where they finished last season – albeit with a Europa League trophy.

The 20-year-old came on as a late substitute in Bilbao when Spurs beat United 1-0 in the final last May. The club’s misfortunes in the Premier League have carried over from 2024/25.

Yet this season, the prospect of relegation seems very likely. Tudor’s side sits just one point above West Ham United, with a tough run-in between now and May. If Spurs were to get relegated, it would boost the Red Devils’ chances of landing Gray.

Number of clubs interested

Being a silver lining in a terrible situation draws attention from other European clubs. Many are ready to capitalise at the expense of Spurs. German side Borussia Dortmund are also interested in the player. They recently parted ways with sporting director Sebastian Kohl, who shifted away from the ‘buy cheap, sell high’ philosophy that the club has built its reputation on. It signals a move towards that approach again, which makes signing Gray make even more sense.

Chelsea are also interested, but the incentive of Champions League football could be the decider. Currently, Chelsea are in sixth place which would only qualify them for the UEFA Conference League next season. United’s stronghold in third position could see them benefit financially and attract a higher calibre of players to Old Trafford.

However, Gray’s future is also dependent on Tottenham’s failures or successes by May. Should Spurs get relegated to the Championship, many key players will depart the club. Gray’s rise to the top in 2025/26 would see him leave in order to continue his development at the elite level.

Casemiro’s departure leaves a gap that any summer arrivals will need to fill to get a significant amount of playing time. Alongside Kobbie Mainoo, the duo could potentially form England’s midfield for the next decade.

Being an ex-Leeds graduate is the icing on the cake, too, for United faithfuls. A move to Manchester and any success that comes with it would follow the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Eric Cantona and Alan Smith as those who achieved cult status at Old Trafford.
