- Cole Palmer grew up a Manchester United fan
- Chelsea star is not hitting the heights of previous seasons
- Palmer reportedly homesick
It seems increasingly unlikely that a return to Manchester with Manchester United is on the books for Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, as the Englishman is completely focused on helping the Blues earn Champions League football.
Despite growing up as a United fan, Palmer joined Manchester City’s academy at the U8 level and climbed through the ranks over a decade to reach the first team.
He spent three seasons at City, lifting the treble as well as the UEFA Super Cup—a match in which he scored the equaliser in what would ultimately be his final appearance for the club.
On 1 September, Chelsea secured his signature for £40 million, and since arriving, Palmer has added both the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup to his growing trophy cabinet.
From United fan to Premier League star
Ben Jacobs has told The United Stand that Palmer is concentrating on driving Chelsea into the Champions League and forcing his way into Tuchel’s England squad. Anyone trying to get him this summer will be wasting their time
Only Palmer and Moises Caicedo are untouchable players at Chelsea. They are on long-term contracts, which makes it extremely difficult to prise them away from Stamford Bridge.
Since joining the London club, Palmer has transformed from a promising youngster into one of the Premier League’s standout performers
Over three seasons, he has featured 122 times, scoring 53 goals and registering 32 assists, steadily cementing his status as a game-changer.
Moreover, he made an immediate impact, earning the Chelsea Player of the Year award in his inaugural season, as well as the Premier League Young Player of the Season and the PFA Young Player of the Year.
In a frustrating year for the Englishman, during which a groin injury sidelined him for several games, a return to Manchester has reportedly been on the cards, with the midfielder seemingly struggling with homesickness.
Manager Liam Rosenior was quick to discredit these claims, stating: “I’ve had numerous conversations with Cole and he seems, and is, very, very happy to be here.
“He is a huge part of our long‑term plans, he’s an outstanding player. Every player goes through difficult moments in their career with injuries, but that is no indication of his quality.”
Palmer has over seven years on his contract and is one of Chelsea’s most important players. He played a key role in their FIFA Club World Cup win last summer.
Could Palmer Return to Manchester?
Whilst it seems unlikely that a return could be on the cards for Palmer this summer, it does not rule out future seasons.
For starters, Manchester United aren’t planning to invest in an attacking playmaker this summer, with most of their midfield budget earmarked to replace the departing Casemiro.
However, with Bruno Fernandes’ contract set to expire in just over a year—albeit with an option to extend for one more season—a move for Palmer could come back onto United’s agenda in the next campaign or two.
Palmer could be the perfect swap for their captain, with United on the lookout for a young talent that can match the attacking output of their skipper.
