Manchester United are reportedly ‘in talks’ with veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton to extend his stay at Old Trafford. His contract expires this summer, and he has been free to have discussions with other clubs since the start of the year.

The 39-year-old returned to United in the summer of 2021 after joining from Aston Villa. He made his competitive debut that same year in a Champions League group-stage game against Young Boys.

The goalkeeper had to wait almost 20 years for his actual debut at Old Trafford. That was despite being an academy graduate who played in the Premier League for Burnley and Aston Villa.

Since re-joining United, he has signed multiple contract extensions with the club. Given his senior age, most renewals have been capped at one-year extensions.

United begin discussions

According to The Athletic, United have begun discussions with Heaton to extend his stay beyond the current campaign. It is expected to be a one-year extension.

Heaton has been subject to interest from abroad, with Serie A side Napoli being named as a potential destination. Naples,, or more specifically Antonio Conte teams, in recent years have been a safe haven for United ‘flops’ to flock to. Romelu Lukaku, Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay all currently play for the current Serie A champions under Conte.

Heaton has been part of a six-man leadership group at the club. This consists of himself, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazroui and Lisandro Martinez.

His presence on the training ground has been effective as a mentor to a young United squad over the past few seasons. Speaking about his role in August 2025, he said: “I am obviously honoured as ever to be part of that and will try to have as much influence on it as I possibly can.”

The last person to hold the senior goalkeeping role as third-choice was Lee Grant, brought in by Jose Mourinho. Grant retired in 2022 before moving into management. In January, he was sacked as Huddersfield Town manager after eight months in the job.

Goalkeeping dilemma

United are expected to encounter a goalkeeping merry-go-round this summer.

Senne Lammens is the undisputed number one in goal after impressing since his arrival from Royal Antwerp. His calmness has been a world away from the goalkeeping drama that involved Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir for much of the last few seasons. It even filtered into the start of this season before Lammens arrived.

Onana was sent on loan to Trabzonspor, but is expected to return. The Cameroonian has made it clear that he wants to fight for his place, but it looks unlikely given his track record at the club. It would be too expensive to keep him as a second-choice goalkeeper, too. Onana currently earns around £120,000 a week and has a contract until 2028.

Bayindir is expected to return to Turkey permanently, with Besiktas reportedly interested in the player. The Turk has made six Premier League appearances this season. However, his time in goal was marred by nerves and blunders, which solidified United’s intent to buy Lammens.

Radek Vitek is impressing on loan at Bristol City, and could return to the club next season as a second-choice. As long as United are on track to qualify for the Champions League, a 60-game season could see him involved in a series of games. At this stage, it feels just as important whether Vitek himself will want to see more game time or be happy to serve as an understudy.

Heaton’s extension is interesting on paper, given that there will be five other goalkeepers on the books in July. The club will at least look to offload two of those, so the ideal pecking order could see Lammens, Vitek and Heaton as United’s three goalkeepers.

Lammens, 23, and Vitek, 22, offer Heaton an invaluable role off the pitch to help guide United’s future securely.
