- Arne Slot is performing worse than Ruben Amorim this season
- Liverpool suffered 2-0 loss to PSG
- Manchester United sacked Amorim in January
Arne Slot has now lost more games managing Liverpool this season (17) than Ruben Amorim did for Manchester United last season (16).
Whilst no one can argue Slot and Amorim had wildly different first campaigns at their respective clubs, the Dutchman’s second season has unravelled in a way United fans have relished.
One of those defeats came against United on October 19, and the sides meet again at Old Trafford on May 3. That 2–1 loss at Anfield marked United’s first win there since Juan Mata’s scissor-kick wondergoal secured a 2–1 victory under Louis van Gaal.
Slot vs Amorim
Of course, in the grand scheme of things, this stat truly means nothing. Whilst Slot and Liverpool are having a lousy season at best, last season they absolutely walked the league.
On April 27, 2025, they obliterated Tottenham Hotspur 5-1, going on to win their first league title in five years and their first in front of fans since 1990—35 years ago.
Manchester United, however, had their worst season in 51 years, finishing 15th in the league whilst losing the Europa League final 1-0 to Spurs.
If you had doubled Manchester United’s points in the Premier League last season—42—and they would still be behind Liverpool—84—on goal difference.
But this season, both clubs’ fortunes have taken a swift curve. United, under the guise of Michael Carrick, have surged forward.
In their last 10 games, they have won seven, drawn twice, and lost just once. Slot’s Liverpool, meanwhile, have stumbled. Four wins, two draws, four losses.
United have picked up 23 points since Carrick was made interim manager, nine more than their rivals’ 14.
What is next for both clubs?
Both clubs head into the summer with uncertainty hanging over them.
United have stabilised, but they have not yet named a permanent manager. Carrick leads the race, though the board will still weigh elite alternatives. No decision looks imminent.
Liverpool face a similar crossroads. Slot’s title-winning first season buys him credit, but this campaign has frayed badly, and pressure has followed.
With Xabi Alonso waiting in the wings, Liverpool could mirror United’s route and turn to a former midfielder to lead the next phase.
