Man Utd’s Mason Mount highlights Michael Carrick’s man management

Mason Mount has aired his true feelings about interim Manchester United manager Michael Carrick amid his bit-part role since Ruben Amorim’s sacking. The 27-year-old midfielder started the season brightly, in the same vein as he concluded the 2024/25 campaign, before injury woes struck again.

Mount has missed six of Carrick’s 13 matches in charge through injury, playing just 27 minutes across four appearances and watching the other three as an unused substitute. While United are benefitting from Bruno Fernandes returning to his natural position, the former Chelsea star has suffered.

Opportunities could be limited next season, too, if Fernandes continues to stay loyal to the Red Devils ahead of a very likely Champions League return. And now, Mount is the latest of Carrick’s players to offer their public stance on whether that feat should result in a permanent contract.

Mount opens up on Carrick

On Tuesday, a day after United’s 2-1 win against Brentford at Old Trafford, Mount visited St. George’s Park to manage Wishes United – a team of 11 children with critical illnesses – alongside Luke Shaw.

When asked whether he wanted to see the Red Devils reward Carrick’s success this season with the permanent job, Mount told Mail Sport:

“It’s not my call, but you can see the way we play and how we’ve performed since he’s been in, the kind of position we’re in now, and we’re really pushing on. I really like the way he works and the way he sees the game. He’s very level-headed and knows what he wants going into games.”

Mount added:

“Like, you see on the sidelines, he’s very calm and collected. He’s been there, he’s done it. He knows what it’s like as a player. It’s that confidence that he’s brought, and I think everyone’s reacted well to that.

“He’s been brilliant for me personally. It was difficult at the beginning because Michael came in, and I got injured. But he was saying, ‘I want you back, you’re a massive part of the team and the squad, and when you’re around the lads you obviously have a big effect.’ So I know where I stand within the group.”

If not Michael Carrick, who?

Carrick is unsurprisingly the hot favourite to become United’s permanent head coach, having overseen nine wins and just two narrow defeats in 13 games to all but secure a Champions League comeback.

Luis Enrique represents a dream candidate, but he is pursuing back-to-back Champions League successes at Paris Saint-Germain and set for a new contract.

Julian Nagelsmann and Mauricio Pochettino’s duties with Germany and the United States at this summer’s World Cup complicate things. United are unlikely to wait.

Premier League options include Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner, who will both become free agents at the end of the campaign. But Carrick’s results have been more impressive in the same competition.

Benjamin Sesko and Amad are among the United players to have publicly endorsed Carrick’s stay. However, while it sounds like Mount would also be open to that outcome, his future at Old Trafford looks bleak.
