- Manchester United legend Bryan Robson reacts to Liverpool defeat
- Arne Slot’s men lost to PSG
- Ex-Red Devils skipper couldn’t hide his amusement
There are some rivalries that never fade, and Bryan Robson clearly hasn’t lost his sense of humour when it comes to Liverpool’s misery.
The former Manchester United captain was enjoying a day at the Aintree races when he was asked about the Reds’ 2-0 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. His response was pure class.
Bryan Robson, 69, chatted with SunSport’s Matt Chapman live on ITV’s racing coverage. When cheekily asked if he’d been celebrating Liverpool’s loss, the legendary midfielder laughed and delivered a line that will have United fans grinning from ear to ear.
‘I’m so sorry for them’
“No… I’m so sorry for them,” Robson said, unable to hide his smile. Chapman joked that a police escort would be ready for the former United hero, but Robson quickly added a more diplomatic note, although though the damage was already done.
He went on: “Liverpool were up against a really good team. PSG are one of the best, play some fantastic football. The movement and passing and everything is really good. I like to see the English teams do really well in the Champions League because it makes success for everybody. They struggled last night but I do like to see English teams do well.”
Liverpool fell behind on 11 minutes via Desire Doue’s deflected shot, before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia doubled the lead in the second half. Things could have got even worse for Arne Slot’s side, with two big penalty shouts waved away. The defeat means Liverpool have now lost four consecutive away games for the first time since April 2012.
Bryan Robson on England’s World Cup chances
The conversation then turned to the Three Lions, with Chapman noting Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup as a potential omen. Bryan Robson, who earned 90 England caps, offered his measured verdict.
“When you’ve got an Italian team that three times have not qualified for the World Cup, you’ve got to look and say anything can happen in this game,” he said.
“England have got an outside chance. I would like to see us be a bit better defensively but other than that I think we’ve got a great midfield and great forwards,” Robson added.
For now, though, United fans will simply enjoy Robson’s masterclass in mock sympathy. “So sorry for them”, the perfect three-word summary of a sorry night for Liverpool.
