With Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire both suspended for the upcoming clash against Chelsea, Manchester United find themselves in a familiar defensive crisis.
The young pair of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are expected to start at Stamford Bridge. It is what the club imagine to be the Red Devils pairing for the future. However, fans probably did not think it would be relied upon so soon.
Expected to be named on the bench is Godwill Kukonki. The teenager has been named on the substitute bench under Michael Carrick. More prominently, he was a familiar name under Ruben Amorim earlier this season.
Kukonki has been a feature for Darren Fletcher’s U18 side this season. He has made 15 appearances in the league alongside the likes of JJ Gabriel and Noah Ajayi.
Amorim Foreshadowed Kukonki Being ‘Ready’
Speaking in December 2024 to MUTV, the former boss praised the defender at the same time as Yoro, who was making his debut around this time. Kukonki was 16, hailed as the future of Old Trafford.
Amorim said: “He’s 16, but he impressed me a lot.” Kukonki is a left-footed centre-back who stands at 6ft 5″ with an incredible physical presence.
What the former head coach foreshadowed becomes a reality this Sunday. He added: “If something happened with the first-team squad, they have to step up, and I think he’s ready, he’s very adult to handle the demands of the Premier League.”
Amorim’s conviction that Kukonki was ready to “handle” the physicality of top-flight football could be put to the test against a high-quality opposition at the weekend. Despite the managerial seat having changed hands since then, the defensive shortage has forced Michael Carrick’s hand. In the second half against Leeds, Manuel Ugarte was played at centre-back as the Reds were reduced to ten men after Martinez’s sending off.
Chances to Impress Ahead
The 18 year-old was rewarded with a callup to the England U18 squad over the latest international break. He has previsouly represented the Three Lions at U17 and U19 level.
If given the chance under Carrick, he could feature in plans for next season. Pre-season is the first stop, with many academy prospects likely to get a chance to impress over the summer. With several senior players expected to report later on in the tour due to World Cup commitments, it could give the likes of Kukonki a head start.
Maguire and Martinez will head off to North America. Pending the fitness of Matthijs De Ligt, this would leave Yoro, Heaven and Kukonki as the available centre-backs for the first few games.
Amorim may be gone, but his identification of Kukonki as a “ready-made” professional remains. Whether the Portuguese got that right won’t be decided in just one or two games. However, it will give the fans a sneak peek into the future of Old Trafford.
