Manchester United “initiate” Morgan Rogers Discussions

  • Morgan Rogers will cost a hefty fee
  • Is he worth it?

Manchester United have now learned the asking price for Morgan Rogers, with Aston Villa putting a price tag on the English star.

As United continue searching for ways to elevate an already dangerous attack, attention has turned towards Rogers, the former Manchester City academy graduate who has rapidly grown into one of the Premier League’s standout attacking midfielders.

He also carries a prior connection with Michael Carrick.

Rogers already has a history with United’s interim manager, Michael Carrick. In the 2023/24 season, he joined a Carrick-managed Middlesbrough for a reported £1.5 million from City.

Prior to Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa, Carrick was asked about his former player.

“It is fantastic for him to see Morgan going on to do so well and for a good period of time. He had the initial signing in the January, and I wasn’t really sure how it was going to go, it was a big step for him, he hadn’t played for an awful long time at Middlesbrough so I felt he could have done with a little bit more.

“But as soon as he had gone to Aston Villa, he took huge steps and become a major, major part of their team and part of the England team so that is how well he has done.”

Now, at 23 years old—turning 24 on 26 July—Rogers has firmly established himself as one of the league’s brightest players.

His rise earned formal recognition in the 2024/25 campaign, when he claimed the PFA Young Player of the Year award ahead of Liam Delap, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Milos Kerkez, Dean Huijsen, and Ethan Nwaneri.

Morgan Rogers Price Revealed

According to Sebastien Vidal of Weekend Sports, Villa have placed a £90 million valuation on Rogers. Vidal also reports that United have already opened discussions, identifying him as a potential long-term successor to Bruno Fernandes.

With Fernandes entering the final year of his contract—albeit with an option for an additional year—United know they must begin planning for life beyond their captain.

Replacing Fernandes, however, borders on impossible.

Very few players have matched the level of output Fernandes has delivered at Old Trafford over the past six seasons, and the consistency of that production in an often inconsistent United side only magnifies the scale of his contribution.

Rogers may not replicate that level immediately, but United would still view him as a highly credible heir.

The English midfielder combines physicality, intelligence, and direct attacking thrust—qualities that make him one of the most complete young profiles in the league, and one of the few capable of growing into the creative burden Fernandes has carried for years.

If the United board were to act fast, they could deploy the versatile Rodgers on the left flank, and have him learn from Fernandes over the next one to two seasons.

Do United truly need him?

There is no doubt that Morgan Rogers stands among the brightest stars in the Premier League, with a trajectory that points firmly upwards.

But right now, Manchester United do not need him. Whilst replacing the iridescent Fernandes is pragmatic, the lower half of the midfield needs changing first.

United have searched for a true ball-winning defensive midfielder for over a decade—a role they have not fully stabilised since Carrick retired.

Casemiro has anchored that position since 2022 and, at times—particularly this season—he has delivered. But the profile now calls for evolution: a younger, more dynamic presence who can control, cover, and drive the side forward from midfield.

Elliot Anderson is the obvious choice, and he does not come cheap. With figures around £100 million already circulating, any move for Anderson would consume a significant portion of United’s budget—especially when further depth across midfield still needs addressing.
