- Leny Yoro could miss rest of Manchester United’s season
- French defender injured ahead of Chelsea game
- Michael Carrick likely to turn to Luke Shaw
Michael Carrick has received more bad news about his defensive options ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Chelsea tomorrow (April 18th). The Reds travel to Stamford Bridge to face the Blues in a match with huge implications on the top-five race.
United are already without Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez through suspension, but Leny Yoro will also miss the game. The French defender hasn’t travelled to west London with the squad.
SunSport’s Samuel Luckhurst reports that Yoro will miss the Chelsea game, and there are some concerns that he might be out for the rest of the season. It’s a massive headache for Carrick, who will now need to think of another defensive duo for tomorrow’s game.
Leny Yoro Injury Rocks United
Yoro was set to partner Ayden Heaven in a new-look defence due to Maguire and Martinez’s absences. They were about to become one of the youngest starting centre-back duos in Premier League history at a joint age of 39.
That will no longer be the case, though, as Yoro is sidelined and could be for the remainder of the campaign. He had been filling in for Martinez during the Argentine’s injury absence and played instead of Maguire when the former returned against Leeds United on Monday.
Yoro has made 30 appearances across competitions this season, starting 18 of 29 Premier League games. But he joins Matthijs de Ligt on the injury list amid the Dutchman’s lengthy spell out with a back problem.
A Massive Dilemma
Carrick is now likely to turn to Luke Shaw as a makeshift centre-back alongside Heaven. It’s not the defensive duo anybody envisioned starting against Chelsea on Saturday night.
Tomorrow’s game is a must-win for the Reds following a 2-1 loss at home to Leeds on Monday. Carrick’s side still sit third, seven points above their opponents who are sixth with six games left.
Shaw performed a left-sided centre-back role in Ruben Amorim’s back three throughout most of the Portuguese coach’s reign. He fared well for the majority of that period but it isn’t his preferred position.
