Manchester United’s biggest mistake was not appointing ex-Chelsea boss

  • Thomas Tuchel “wowed” Manchester United in 2024
  • German recently extended contract with England
  • Managerial pool for permanent job has shrunk lately

When Manchester United were ready to sack Erik ten Hag in 2024, they were already in contact with potential managers before the FA Cup victory against Manchester City.

Winning the final turned heads within the United board, who opted to keep the Dutchman before ultimately sacking him months later.

It is a regret that the hierarchy must live with, but fans too, as the names who were linked had conducted interviews with club officials that summer.

Tuchel “Wowed” Manchester United

In a report by The Athletic, Laurie Whitwell wrote: “When initially looking to replace Ten Hag around the 2024 FA Cup final, those in charge wanted a head coach who had a clear system and could slot into United’s new structure, hence the talks with candidates such as Kieran McKenna. But Tuchel wowed those across the interview table, leading to an offer. Could an unexpected development like that happen again?”

Conflicting reports at the time suggested that the England manager had disagreements with the transfer policy at the club, which led him to snub the role. Others point towards the club not having decided whether to show faith in ten Hag for the 2024/25 season.

The German came to blows due to internal friction at Chelsea and Bayern Munich. He was reportedly unwilling to operate in systems where his influence on recruitment was toned down. Wherever the 52-year-old has found success, he has always been a hands-on approach manager.

Yet, United may still live to regret Tuchel not becoming Manchester United manager. After Amorim’s exit earlier this year, Michael Carrick has steadied the ship as an interim. However, the elite pool of available names has significantly shrunk.

Tuchel himself has since committed his future to the Three Lions beyond the 2026 World Cup. He signed a contract extension with England that keeps him in the dugout through to Euro 2028. Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann did the same last year with his nation, but he still poses as a gettable option, unlike the former Chelsea boss.

Living to Regret Tuchel Snub

If the reports of Tuchel snubbing the job due to the transfer policy are true, the decision feels entirely viable given his history.

United’s rigid shift toward the “head coach” model under INEOS was a seismic shift in operations. The manager has a significantly waning influence over transfer dealings. Ruben Amorim was the first manager who signed the contract under these terms, and will not be the last.

It was always going to be a sticking point for a character like Tuchel. While the club’s desire to avoid the recruitment chaos of the last decade is understandable, the reluctance to budge could be a source of regret for the INEOS hierarchy.

The club missed out on a proven winner, which could sting even further if England go on to win the World Cup this summer. Alternatively, a disastrous World Cup campaign for England could theoretically put him back on the market. Although the Reds would ideally have concluded their managerial search by the time that players report to duty just before the World Cup final in New Jersey.
