- Manchester United face Chelsea
- Leny Yoro misses out through injury
- Initial fears allayed over Frenchman
Manchester United have been handed a boost over Leny Yoro after the French defender picked up an injury ahead of the Chelsea game tonight. The young centre-back was set to start in place of Harry Maguire or Lisandro Martinez.
Yoro sustained an injury during training and was ruled out of the battle at Stamford Bridge. Reports claimed that there were concerns at the club that the 20-year-old might miss the rest of the season.
Michael Carrick is already without Maguire and Martinez tonight due to suspension. The latter will serve the first of a three-match ban.
Leny Yoro Injury Not Expected To Be Lengthy
The good news is that Yoro’s injury isn’t as bad as first feared. Rob Dawson of ESPN claims that United “aren’t expecting him to be out for too long”.
Yoro has been a starter under Carrick for over a month due to Martinez’s calf problem. The Argentine returned for Leeds United’s visit to Old Trafford on Monday.
The Frenchman remained in the starting lineup due to Maguire missing the game through suspension. He had been set to start against Chelsea until picking up a knock in training.
When the news broke the suggestions that he’d miss the remainder of the campaign made for a nightmare. The Reds are already without Matthijs de Ligt, who has been sidelined since December with a back injury.
United face Chelsea in a game with huge top-five implications. The 2-1 defeat to Leeds on Monday means Carrick’s men sit third, seven points above the Blues, who are sixth heading into the encounter at Stamford Bridge.
Carrick Names Man Utd XI vs Chelsea
With Yoro, Maguire and Martinez all unavailable, all eyes were on who Carrick would start in central defence. The English coach has somewhat surprised a few by opting for Noussair Mazraoui alongside Ayden Heaven.
The expectation ahead of the game was that Luke Shaw would pull into the left-sided centre-back spot. But this call means the Englishman continues at left-back while Diogo Dalot starts at right-back.
Mazraoui is under pressure to impress amid a dissapointing season. He was one of the team’s best performers during his debut campaign, but injuries and a lack of consistency have taken hold this term.
There is no word on how long Yoro will be out for, but Maguire will be available for the Brentford clash next Monday (April 27th). His return will be vital as his absence in the defeat to Leeds explained just how important he is in defence.
