- Manchester United beat Chelsea 1-0
- Alejandro Garnacho struggled against former club
- Argentine’s ex-United teammates reacted on social media
9Alejandro Garnacho appeared to be the butt of jokes from Manchester United players on social media following a 1-0 win over Chelsea last night. He made his first appearance against his former club since leaving Old Trafford for Stamford Bridge last summer.
The Argentine winger insisted on making the move and got his wish when a £40m deal was agreed. But the 21-year-old has endured a dissapointing debut season at Chelsea and he came into last night’s game with his future even the subject of speculation.
There were claims that his current club were already considering offloading him at the end of the season. His showing hasn’t helped quash such rumours.
Man United Stars Laugh at Garnacho’s Expense
Garnacho came on in the first half after Estevao suffered an injury. He received abuse from visiting fans whose song about the Argentine was heard throughout the game.
Some of his former teammates seemed to poke fun at getting the better of him too. Luke Shaw posted an image of him leaving Garnacho tumbling to the ground and captioned it:
“Important win.”
Bruno Fernandes seemed to suggest that Shaw’s post was partly directed at Garnacho. He responded with a sticker that read:
“That’s a violation.”
Shea Lacey and Tyler Fletcher both responded in the comments with laughing emoticons. But it didn’t stop there as Matheus Cunha replied to a post from Diogo Dalot and wrote:
“Dad you brought the 10%.”
Whether the Brazilian ace meant the reported 10% sell-on clause in Garnacho’s contract remains unknown. But fans certainly took the response that way.
Man United Upgraded on Garnacho
On the same night that Cunha was on target in a 1-0 win against Chelsea, the man he replaced put in yet another woeful performance. The Brazilian started on the left at Stamford Bridge, a position occupied by Garnacho for most of his time in the Reds’ senior squad.
Garnacho, who Mark Goldbridge sarcastically called the visitors’ best player, did fare well during his United career, but his professionalism was always a concern. This led to his departure after he called out Michael Carrick’s predecessor, Ruben Amorim, for not starting him in a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.
The Argentine allegedly told the club that if he couldn’t join Chelsea, he’d stay and not play. But a £40m fee was agreed and he headed off to west London.
Cunha, meanwhile, arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5m after a release clause was triggered. The 26-year-old is enjoying a fine season and took his tally to eight goals and four assists in 30 league games.
Compare that with Garnacho who has managed just one goal and four assists in 22 league games. It’s easy to see why many feel United made the best decision parting ways and moving for the former Atletico Madrid star.
