- Manchester United fans sense an agenda
- Rasmus Hojlund ‘bit of brilliance’ irks supporters
- One of several ex-Reds who are getting preferential treatment
Manchester United fans have called out the media for trying to ‘hype up’ former Reds players after watching them describe Rasmus Hojlund’s goal for Napoli. The Danish frontman contributed to a 4-0 win over Cremonense on Friday night.
Hojlund has spent the season on loan at the Serie A club and is set to make the move permanent this summer. A £38m obligation to buy will be triggered and he’ll leave his Old Trafford nightmare behind him.
The 23-year-old made a dream £72m switch from Atalanta to the Theatre of Dreams in the summer of 2023. He failed to reach expectations, flopping, although not helped by the lack of a proven striker to rotate with.
Bit of Brilliance?
Hojlund managed just 14 goals in 62 Premier League games for United. The Dane struggled to impress, not just on the goal front but also in his hold-up play.
The Dane has fortunately found form at Napoli, posting 14 goals in 40 games across competitions. He is enjoying himself in Naples and moving on from his Old Trafford woes.
Hojlund might have thought he’d found his 15th goal when his deflected effort gave Antonio Conte’s side a 3-0 lead against Cremonense. But the heavy deflection saw it go down as a Filippo Terracciano own goal.
TNT Sports still hailed the former United striker, calling it a “bit of brilliance.” They wrote along with a clip of the goal:
“2-0 now to Napoli, and it’s a bit of brilliance from Rasmus Hojlund. The strength the run and cut inside, and a deflection on his shot takes it past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.”
The broadcaster knew what they were doing when they tried to provoke a reaction from United fans. They certainly got one.
‘Bit of What’ – Man Utd Fans Ridicule ‘Brilliance’ Claim
Hojlund did do well to get himself in a position to have a strike on goal, but calling it a “bit of brilliance” is far-fetched. That’s the verdict of most United fans who sense an agenda rather than a valid opinion.
One fan wrote: “Brilliance? These pages love hyping up ex United players.”
Another added: “Bit of what? (laughing face).”
One responded: “I bet my soul if Hojlund scored that for United it would not be labelled “a bit of brilliance.””
This was echoed by another: “Can tell he’s an ex United player saying that’s a bit of brilliance.”
One wrote: “That’s one of the most misleading descriptions I’ve ever read.”
Another added: “This is how propaganda spreads.”
It’s not the first time United fans have called out the media for trying to paint a certain picture of a former player’s performance elsewhere. The club were told they were the problem when Antony impressed on loan at Real Betis last season.
But the Brazilian winger has endured a nosedive since making a permanent move to the La Liga club. There’s little to no mention of this, much like Marcus Rashford who Barcelona are cooling interest in signing permanently.
