- Man Utd signing Ederson
- Three Reds now up for sale
- The trio collectively cost £133m
Three players are now headed for the Manchester United exit door ahead of Ederson’s arrival from Atalanta. The Reds have agreed on a deal with the Serie A side for the Brazilian midfielder.
Reports claim that United have reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Ederson in a €45m (£38.9m) package deal. He will become Michael Carrick’s first signing as permanent head coach.
While INEOS is expected to conduct plenty more business, three players are now at risk of being sold.
Man Utd put trio up for sale
The first is Manuel Ugarte, who has long been tipped to be offloaded amid a dismal spell at Old Trafford. The Uruguayan midfielder arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024 in a £50m deal.
Ugarte has failed to convince and Ederson looks set to take his place in Carrick’s team. Casemiro is already set to depart when his contract expires, but that hasn’t prevented INEOS from “likely” moving the 25-year-old on, per Sky Sports.
The main issue with trying to part with Ugarte are his high wages. That could mean United sanction a loan if they can’t raise a fee for the defensive midfielder.
Another player headed for the chopping block is Andre Onana who has spent the season on loan at Trabzonspor. The Cameroonian goalkeeper lost his number one berth at the start of the campaign and joined the Turkish side.
BBC Sport claim that Onana has been informed that he isn’t part of the club’s plans moving forward. That’s despite the 30-year-old returning for pre-season after his loan spell ends.
Onana joined United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 in a £47.2m deal. He faltered between the sticks, unable to become the David de Gea replacement the club required.
Perhaps the most unfortunate victim of the transfer chiefs’ rebuild this summer is Joshua Zirkzee. The Dutch attacker hasn’t lived up to expectations but has shown a desire to succeed with United.
Zirkzee cost £36.5m, and the final instalment of that deal is paid this summer. The 25-year-old, signed from Bologna, has been playing as Benjamin Sesko’s backup this season but has managed just two goals in 24 league games.
Getting ruthless
United need to make brutal decisions to ensure Carrick has a squad capable of challenging for major trophies next season and beyond. That means offloading players who haven’t hit the mark during their time at Old Trafford.
Ugarte and Onana have disappointed, while Zirkzee has continuously struggled. Offloading all three is the right call given the need to strengthen several areas of the squad.
