- Kobbie Mainoo extends Manchester United contract
- Andoni Iraola of interest
- Mason Mount makes Premier League title claim
Manchester United fans are celebrating the announcement of Kobbie Mainoo’s new contract. The English midfielder has finally committed his future to the club, penning a new long-term deal until 2031.
Mainoo’s future has long been the subject of speculation, especially before Michael Carrick’s arrival in January. A lack of regular minutes casts doubts over the 21-year-old continuing at Old Trafford.
An uncertain situation has now been clarified as he has extended his stay at the Theatre of Dreams. But it’s not guaranteed that Carrick will be the one in charge come next season.
Mainoo – Signed, Sealed United
Mainoo and his family were in Manchester yesterday to sign a contract, which means he’s now tied to the club for the next five years. It’s a hugely exciting moment that clearly highlights that he is viewed as the future of the Reds.
The academy graduate explained his decision:
“Manchester United has always been my home; this special club means everything to my family. I have grown up seeing the impact that our club has on our city, and I relish the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt.”
Mainoo pushed to leave on loan last summer after being handed a bit-part role by Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach’s dismissal led to Carrick arriving and reintegrating him into the starting XI.
United Eye Iraola
Carrick has all but certainly guided United to Champions League qualification and many feel it’s a foregone conclusion he’ll be appointed head coach permanently. But that might not be how INEOS view it, as a report from The Telegraph claims that they are showing interest in Andoni Iraola.
The Spaniard, who is leaving Bournemouth this summer, is reportedly the “strongest candidate to rival Carrick.” He has earned plaudits for transforming the South Coast outfit during his time at the Vitality.
United wouldn’t have to pay compensation for Iraola and that might be factored in. But some fans might question whether he’s truly a better option than Carrick.
Mount Talks Up Title
Mason Mount has endured a difficult spell at United due to recurring injury issues. The former Chelsea midfielder has lacked fitness ever since arriving from Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2023.
But he is a popular member of the Reds’ senior team and you can see the passion he holds for the club. He’s also talking a good game and feels the squad could challenge for the title (via Manchester Evening News):
“I have a goal of winning the Premier League. I’ve won the Champions League already, but can we do that? Yes, I think we can as a group.”
United haven’t won the title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. A return to the Champions League is on the horizon and next season might truly be an indicator of where the Reds are at regarding returning to the top of English football.
