- Kobbie Mainoo signs new Manchester United contract
- Starlet pens improved deal until 2031
- Midfield rebuild underway
Today is a good day to fly the flag of Manchester United. Kobbie Mainoo has decided on his future, and his future lies at Old Trafford. The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract, running until 2031 on long-awaited improved terms.
Mainoo was still just 20 until earlier this month, yet he has already experienced so much in his fledgling senior football career. An explosive breakthrough overseen by Erik ten Hag, the nod from Gareth Southgate to represent England on the biggest stage just months later, and then the arduous era of Ruben Amorim.
To say it has been a rollercoaster few years for Mainoo and United would be an understatement. But all parties, fully aligned once more, can now look towards building a successful future that too many talented academy products before the Red Devils’ No. 37 didn’t quite experience.

Why Mainoo’s Contract Means More
Even though Mainoo has played his football at United since the age of six, it is unique that a player so young has experienced so much. He has already accumulated 98 senior appearances and has 12 England caps under his belt.
Not only has the Stockport-born maestro started for his country in a major final, having received a late call-up because his performances were so inspiring. But has also scored the winning goal in an FA Cup final against Manchester City, no less, at Wembley.
Yet, in some ways, United should feel fortunate that Mainoo is still at their disposal. In another reality, he is already thriving alongside Scott McTominay at Napoli, having escaped Amorim’s ignorance.
The Portuguese head coach’s treatment of Mainoo was baffling throughout his torrid tenure, but it has become increasingly more so since Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick reintroduced him to the team.
After starting none of United’s first 20 Premier League games of the season, Mainoo has started all 12 that he’s been available for under Carrick, playing the full 90 minutes in 11 of them. He missed the defeat to Leeds through a minor injury, and that dismal display further highlighted his importance.
In recent weeks, now that he has minutes back in his legs and the confidence of a new boss, Mainoo has looked as good as, if not better than, he ever has. His mature showing at Chelsea fuelled a crucial win before the well-rounded nature of his game was on full display against Brentford last time out.
How Man Utd’s Midfield Rebuild Must Look
But it’s worth repeating what I penned at the end of the introduction. Many a United ‘wonderkid’ has burst onto the scene and established themselves in the last decade, but not one has reached the heights this club should aspire to.
Marcus Rashford immediately comes to mind. A memorable career with his boyhood club? Absolutely. Two FA Cups, two League Cups, and a Europa League lifted, 138 goals scored, and a Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award received over the course of 426 appearances.
That said, if Mainoo spends 10 years in United’s first team without lifting a Premier League title, the club would have failed. With that in mind, it is essential that this summer’s transfer business goes to plan.
The M16 giants’ plans to recruit at least two top-class midfielders are no secret. The wishlist likely extends to three names if Manuel Ugarte departs as expected. Any new arrivals must complement Mainoo.
United’s top priority has to be a defensive midfielder to replace Casemiro and play alongside him, should Michael Carrick become the club’s permanent head coach, or should his alternative also opt for a midfield pairing.
Another defensive-minded option to upgrade on Ugarte is also a necessity, while the other should offer Mainoo direct competition in what will be a busier, more demanding 2026/27 season.
We’ll cross the bridge when we get there, but for now, United fans are well within their rights to celebrate Mainoo’s renewal. At one point, not too long ago, it seemed like this day would never come.
