  • Manchester United academy stars look to break into the first team
  • Who are they?
  • When can we expect their debuts?

As the Manchester United youth academy continues to churn out future stars, Read ManUtd has identified three players we believe will break into the first team next season and make their debuts.

Filled with immense talent and potential, Carrington stands as one of the finest academies in the country, consistently producing elite-level prospects.

Across a 94-year-and-two-month history, 258 players have progressed from the youth academy into the first team, including the likes of Johnny Carey, George Best, Bobby Charlton, Paul Scholes, and Ryan Giggs.

Now, these three players look to follow in their footsteps as they aim to continue the 88-year record of featuring an academy graduate in every matchday squad.

Plenty of names continue to cause a stir within the academy, but which three stand above the rest?

Note: We are only including players yet to have made their debut for the first team

JJ Gabriel

At this point, JJ Gabriel needs little introduction. An energetic, elusive winger at just 15 years of age, Gabriel already commands attention as one of the standout prospects in English football.

He leads the U18 division scoring charts with 20 goals, while the next closest player of the same age, Joshua Abe of Liverpool, trails well behind on eight.

Gabriel now stands on the verge of history—not just for United. Turning 16 on October 6, if he makes his debut before 24 October, he will become the youngest player in Manchester United’s history.

Furthermore, if he scores before 19 December 2026, he will break the record held by Max Dowman as the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history.

The comparison between the two is striking. Both dominated their respective age groups, forcing early promotion, and both look destined to debut at just 15.

Gabriel continues to draw interest from across Europe, with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona all monitoring his situation.

For now, however, he remains a Manchester United player—and it feels increasingly likely that his professional debut will arrive at some point next season.

Godwill Kukonki

After already featuring as an unused substitute in five matches, Godwill Kukonki edges ever closer to his debut.

Standing at 196cm (6ft 5in), Kukonki would become the tallest centre-back at the club, even surpassing goalkeeper Senne Lammens. A naturally left-footed defender, he also offers versatility by operating at left-back—drawing comparisons to Josko Gvardiol.

In the modern game, left-footed defenders hold immense value, and Kukonki stands out as one of the most promising prospects at the club.

This season alone, he has featured in 33 matches, scoring once and assisting twice. Across those appearances, United have recorded 11 clean sheets, with Kukonki playing a commanding role in the club’s run to the FA Youth Cup final.

He has also gained experience at U21 level, featuring against sides such as Anderlecht and Real Madrid Castilla in the Premier League International Cup.

With injuries continuing to affect the first team, his opportunity may arrive sooner than expected. He has already made the bench twice this season—away at Leeds United and Newcastle—and any further issues in defence could see Kukonki called upon.

Noah Ajayi

Hamburg-born Noah Ajayi may only be 17, but he has already taken youth football by storm.

Standing at 188cm (6ft 2in), Ajayi operates as either a winger or a striker and has already earned a call-up to Germany’s U19 side. He has scored eight goals this season and, like Kukonki, has stepped up to the U21 side to bolster the attack.

However, his performances in the FA Youth Cup have truly captured attention. He has scored twice in four matches, but his display against Sunderland in the quarter-finals elevated his profile significantly.

Under the lights at Old Trafford, Ajayi stole the show, opening the scoring with a stunning strike from 25 yards out. In a match where much of the focus centred on JJ Gabriel, Ajayi reminded everyone of the depth at Carrington, earning man of the match honours.

Across his last five league appearances, he has scored four goals, including a brace against Derby County in a 6-1 victory. Although he has yet to receive a first-team call-up, expect him to feature during this summer’s pre-season tour before potentially making his debut at some stage next season.
