Manchester United vs Liverpool – Luke Shaw and Benjamin Sesko ‘Doubts’

  • Manchester United face Liverpool on Sunday (May 3)
  • Benjamin Sesko and Luke Shaw ‘doubts’
  • A win or draw confirms Champions League qualification

Manchester United host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, and it’s being claimed that Luke Shaw and Benjamin Sesko are doubts for the game. Michael Carrick’s men need just a point to seal Champions League qualification following Brighton & Hove Albion’s 3-1 loss to Newcastle United tonight.

Shaw and Sesko have been important members of Carrick’s team throughout his tenure. But there is a possibility that neither of them is fit to play tomorrow.

Zayn_Z7 on X, who correctly claimed that Matheus Cunha would miss the 1-0 win over Chelsea, has raised concerns over the pair. He claims that they are “doubts” and this is not the news United fans will want to hear.

MUFC Academy add to this on X:

“Sesko picked something up on Thursday and then wasn’t involved in Friday’s training . Luke Shaw trained on Thursday but also missed Friday, so he’s not fully certain either at this point. Tyler Fletcher trained and could be in the squad for tomorrow. No sign of Jack.”

No Sesko and Shaw vs Liverpool

If Sesko and Shaw are unavailable, it will give Carrick a massive headache, but one that Cunha’s return could address. The Brazilian has been back in training, and the head coach claimed that he was hopeful his attacker would be involved.

If Cunha is fit that will allow Carrick to opt for the front three he preferred at the start of his reign. Bryan Mbeumo leads the line with Amad out on the right and Cunha on the left.

But should Cunha not be available it could see Patrick Dorgu start despite just returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The Danish winger might also be an option to replace Shaw if the English left-back is unavailable.

What Sesko and Shaw’s Absences Might Mean

United have relied on Shaw throughout the campaign, and he’s been an ever-present at left-back. Without him, Carrick loses a calm and composed head to nullify the threat of Jeremie Frimpong, whose pace could be an issue.

Sesko has also fared well since the turn of the year, with 10 goals in 29 league games. He’d have been ideal to go up against the physical Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

That said, Mbeumo fared well in the reverse fixture, scoring the opener in a 2-1 win at Anfield in October. The Cameroonian has come off the bench in recent months but seems to relish big games like this.
