- Manchester United beat Liverpool
- Kobbie Mainoo scores winner in 3-2 win
- English midfielder hails Michael Carrick
Kobbie Mainoo marked his contract extension with a winner in Manchester United’s enthralling 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday. The English midfielder had huge praise for Michael Carrick after the game.
United raced into a two-nil lead in a dominant first half courtesy of goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. But two shocking errors from Amad and Senne Lammens allowed Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo to get the visitors back into the game in the second half.
With the chaos heading towards its final 15 minutes, Mainoo came to the fore. He delightfully drilled the ball into the bottom corner of Freddie Woodman’s net.
Man Utd 3-2 Liverpool – Mainoo on Carrick ‘Confidence’
Mainoo was thrilled with his side’s win and said that United’s resurgence has been a “credit to the players and the manager.” When Sky Sports asked him about Carrick’s impact specifically, he responded:
“It’s clearly a huge part. The confidence in not just me but all the players. You want to follow him and fight for him. That’s what we showed today.“
Mainoo scored his first goal of the season and it proved to be the most important one of the Red Devils’ campaign. It ensured that Carrick’s men earned bragging rights over their arch-rivals and put the seal on a return to the Champions League next season.
‘Happy’ – Mainoo on his Winner
The 21-year-old has been a key man in the middle of the park ever since Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in January. His United career looked doubtful when he was frozen out of the first team at the start of the season.
Carrick quickly moved to bring him back into the starting XI and he’s reaping the rewards. But today is the first time Mainoo has been on the scoresheet this season.
Mainoo alluded to this by pointing out scoring in such a big game:
“I’ve not been around the goals too much but happy to be around it in this game, such a special occasion and special fixture.”
It was by no means the tidiest of victories, and Mainoo wasn’t perfect, given how the midfield fell apart during most of the second half. But his goal gave United a deserved win based on the first half.
