Manchester United vs Liverpool: Roy Keane on Bruno Fernandes Criticism
  • Former Manchester United midfielder comments on Bruno Fernandes
  • How excellent the Portuguese captain has performed this season
  • United gear up to face Liverpool

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has delivered more choice words on the Red Devils captain, Bruno Fernandes, reigniting the simmering rivalry between the two.

This is, of course, not the first time—and likely not the last—that Keane has spoken about Fernandes.

Over the course of his six-year stint covering the club, Keane has come down hard on the Portuguese on numerous occasions, most notably in February 2025 when the Irishman labelled the midfielder an “imposter” on the Overlap.

He also questioned the Portuguese midfielder’s leadership in the now-viral clip.

Keane ‘Expecting More’ From Fernandes

Ahead of United’s clash against rivals Liverpool, Keane offered his latest assessment of Fernandes during the build-up to the game. He said on Sky Sports:

“Bruno Fernandes is a fantastic player. He’s the kind of player I’d be willing to pay for my seat to watch. I criticise him because I feel that highly about him. I’m not looking at players like Dalot and expecting more.”

Despite the faintly backhanded compliment, it is unlikely to have affected Fernandes, who has had to deal with far harsher scrutiny during his six-year stint in Manchester.

He now sits on 19 assists, one shy of the record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

With United gearing up to face Liverpool momentarily, Fernandes will be itching for his 20th Premier League assist, as he looks to etch his name into history.

More importantly, however, is United beating Liverpool, as they look to cement their claim on third position in the league table.

If United do claim victory today, they will not only mathematically secure qualification to the Champions League but also move six points clear of their north-west rivals, with just three matches to go.

Man Utd vs Liverpool lineups

Manchester United XI: Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Casemiro, Mainoo, Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha; Sesko.

Manchester United are without two of their first-choice centre-backs. Matthijs De Ligt remains sidelined with a back injury sustained in November, whilst Lisandro Martinez serves the third game of his suspension.

Liverpool XI: Woodman; Robertson, Van Dijk, Konate, Frimpong, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Jones, Wirtz, Gakpo.

The visitors’ injury problems, however, are far worse. They are without Alexander Isak, Alisson, Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Wataru Endo, Conor Bradley, and Giovanni Leoni.
