Nicky Butt Urges Man Utd to Back Michael Carrick with Major Overhaul

Manchester United finally secured their return to the Champions League under the leadership of Michael Carrick.

Former player Nicky Butt is being hard-nosed about the club’s renaissance in the post-Ruben Amorim era. The Class of ’92 legend has been a frequent critic of his former side in recent times.

Following a pivotal 3-2 victory over Liverpool that mathematically confirmed a top-five finish, Butt has issued a fresh warning. Instead, he has suggested that qualification is just the starting line which can revitalise United’s run to the top.

Butt: United Need Seven Players

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Nicky Butt gave his former club a reality check. The former midfielder insisted that the club must move forward to back interim boss Carrick. The club are looking to prepare for next season, as they will compete in four separate competitions.

The 1-0 win against Liverpool provided confirmation of United’s qualification for the Champions League. Butt argues that despite United’s uptick in form under the former Boro boss, there is still much work to do.

He said: “I’d like to think after the result against Liverpool, they’ll be sitting down with Michael Carrick because they need to sign seven players.”

Butt’s argument isn’t about replacing the current squad, but rather building on the foundations of success. However, he was wary that recent form is not an excuse to settle where they are.

He continued: “They’ve done really well over the last three months, but they’re still a long way from competing at the very top level. Those additions are for the squad, not necessarily the starting XI.”

Arrivals Must Require Multiple Sales

Often, Butt has been accused of being overly negative about his former club one too many times. However, his current assessment offers a good reflection rather than a baseless rant. After years of failing to make the Champions League, the loss of revenue has ultimately created a deficit. Last year, Sir Jim Ratcliffe went on record to say that the club ‘had no money left’.

To facilitate a seven-player influx as Butt insists, the club must prepare to sacrifice high-value assets. Marcus Rashford is a prime example where good form and sentiment can easily lead to the club wanting to keep the academy graduate as a squad player. However, it is not feasible to have a player on £250,000 a week sitting on the bench.

Additionally, valuable players like Rasmus Højlund, Ugarte and Altay Bayindir must be cashed in. In some cases, it is a painful gamble. Although it is the only way to fund a total overhaul. Furthermore, the ‘seven’ that Butt quotes should include academy promotions. Jim Thwaites, Jacob Devaney and Radek Vitek have all been rumoured to be considered for a role in the first team next season. It’s the way of United, and the way that Butt himself broke through the first team when the wider public laughed off such a thought.
