Manchester United Plot Move for £14m Premier League Left-back

  • Manchester United are keeping an eye on a £14 million left-back
  • Frenchman has had a fantastic season so far
  • What other signings could United make?

Manchester United are reportedly monitoring Adrien Truffert’s situation as they search for a young, high-potential left-back capable of succeeding Luke Shaw in the first team.

Signed for just £14.4 million last summer from Rennes—where he spent his entire career, progressing through the youth system—Truffert arrived as the direct replacement for Hungarian Milos Kerkez, who departed the Cherries for £40m.

In the 11 months since, a strong case can be made that the £40m signing has endured a more subdued campaign than Truffert, who has stood out in his debut Premier League season and emerged as one of the more impressive full-backs in the division.

As Bournemouth sit on the verge of European qualification, Truffert could help guide the Cherries into Europe for the first time in their history.

United Keen on Truffert

According to Graeme Bailey of TEAMtalk, Manchester United are intensifying their search for a new left-back as they plan for life beyond Luke Shaw in the coming years.

After beating rivals Liverpool 3-2, courtesy of a Kobbie Mainoo goal, the United hierarchy recognises that Shaw cannot sustain a 50+ game workload next season.

Despite senior figures at the club holding Shaw in high regard this season—he has featured in every Premier League match and ranks 11th for minutes among outfield players with 2,971, missing just 179 minutes in total—his body has gradually worn down over time.

Across 13 seasons at the Red Devils, the Englishman has suffered a staggering 29 injuries, missing 306 games, and spending 2184 days sidelined. Shaw has spent the equivalent of five years and 359 days on the treatment table, missing over 300 matches across club and country.

His form may remain strong this season, but the attacking sharpness he once possessed has dulled, with Shaw no longer producing the same relentless, overlapping runs that once defined his play.

That reality has pushed United to identify a successor, with Truffert placed firmly on the shortlist.

One of Truffert’s standout qualities is his availability. Since breaking into the Rennes first team in the 2020/21 season, he has consistently featured in at least 30 matches—currently sitting on 29 for Bournemouth—and has missed just 10 games in his career through injury, two of which stemmed from coronavirus.

Other left-back options

With left-back viewed as one of the key areas in need of reinforcement, United have compiled an extensive shortlist of capable options to eventually replace Shaw.

That transition, however, may not materialise this summer.

With United needing to replace a departing Casemiro—who could be joined by Manuel Ugarte—the club will likely allocate the bulk of its budget towards two or three midfield additions.

Lewis Hall—who director of football Jason Wilcox greatly admires—Alejandro Balde, and Myles Lewis-Skelly are among the other names to have surfaced in discussions.

United will target a young, capable full-back who can operate at a high level from the moment he arrives.
