- Manchester United draw 0-0 vs Sunderland
- Mason Mount performance criticised
- English midfielder faces uncertain future
Manchester United fans have hit out at Mason Mount after putting in a dissapointing display in a 0-0 draw against Sunderland. The English midfielder came into Michael Carrick’s starting lineup for the injured Casemiro.
Mount has endured yet another difficult season amid persistent injuries. He also has failed to convince when appearing for the Red Devils, and that again was the case today.
The former Chelsea star started alongside Kobbie Mainoo in central midfield. Carrick turned to the 27-year-old due to Casemiro’s absence, although the Brazilian is expected back for the Nottingham Forest game next week.
Sunderland 0-0 Man Utd: Mount Stumbles
United played out a dull stalemate at the Stadium of Light, unable to make it four wins from four games. The visitors were fortunate not to leave Wearside without anything, given that the Black Cats were superior throughout.
Mount played the full 90 minutes which has been a rarity throughout his Old Trafford career. He won two of three tackles but just three of 10 ground duels and one of two aerial duels.
It was the type of performance that explains why there are doubts over the English midfielder remaining at the club this summer. He has lacked consistent fitness and struggled to make an impact when available.
United’s main concern will be the drop in performance from the entire team since the 3-2 win over Liverpool last time out. But Mount’s outing will also be a worry and could lead to further talk of a possible sale.
‘Bad’ – Fans on Mount Display
United fans weren’t afraid to speak their minds about Mount’s performance against Sunderland. Many feel his signing has proven to be a failure and ponder how he fits into the team.
The Stretford Paddock’s Adam McKola wrote:
“Mount and Zirkzee so far off the pace.”
Another fan gave a grim verdict:
“Mason Mount is genuinely so bad man.”
One supporter added:
“Mount was signed as a pivot midfielder. One who could work in a two man midfield. He’s a shadow of his former self.”
Another added:
“Sorry man but Zirkzee or Mount won’t ever be the answer.”
Adam Joseph wrote:
“This has not been a good first half for Mason Mount, who has only £22m left on his book value this summer, but his injury history & £200k wages are an albatross for Manchester United.”
Mount joined United from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 for £50m. He has made just 70 appearances since then due to recurring injury setbacks, and there has been speculation over a possible summer exit.
