- Thomas Tuchel to name provisional squad for World Cup
- 30-year-old last featured in Euro 2024 loss against Spain
As Manchester United‘s season nears its end, attention will turn to the 2026 World Cup in North America next month.
There are several names in contention for Thomas Tuchel’s England squad from a United perspective. Both Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo earned a recall to the national side in the last international break.
Whilst some last-minute impressions were made, the German will have an idea of his squad for the summer, which could include England players beyond just the two Manchester United players.

Luke Shaw to Make Provisional Squad
According to Mike McGrath of The Daily Telegraph, Manchester United leftback Luke Shaw is set to be included in the England manager’s provisional squad. Albeit, the squad could feature as many as 55 players, which will be submitted today (11 May).
So far, three names have been leaked, which include Shaw, former Red Danny Welbeck and Jarrad Branthwaite. The 30-year-old last featured for the Three Lions under Gareth Southgate in the final of Euro 2024 against Spain.
It was announced a few days ago that the final 22-man squad will be announced on 22 May, which will be a few days before the final day of the Premier League season.

Shaw Deserves Callup
Shaw’s resilience in the face of injury problems has been one of his biggest traits. Last season, he featured just 12 times in all competitions for the Red Devils. Separate calf and muscle injuries kept the left back out for prolonged periods, leading to much frustration from a United fan perspective.
However, this season has been a different story. Shaw is on track to have played in every league game this season if he features against Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion.
It is a fantastic turnaround for a player entering a new phase in his career. The explosiveness that once made him a teenage sensation has faded, but his quality remains. There have been rumours of Lewis-Skelly being considered by INEOS this summer.
As far as his England career is concerned, Manchester City fullback Nico O’Reilly is nailed on to start for Tuchel in tournament football. The other contender at left-back is Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, who has not recently featured for Eddie Howe. This does give Shaw an opening to slot in as the number two experience. He would come in as one of the more experienced members of the squad, which could be to the benefit of the German manager.
