Man Utd star Mason Mount’s father hits out at Michael Owen

  • Michael Owen criticised Man Utd star Mason Mount
  • Tony Mount hit out at club’s former striker
  • Mount’s difficult Old Trafford spell casts doubts over future

Mason Mount’s father, Tony, has hit out at Michael Owen after the Premier League legend criticised the Manchester United midfielder. The former Red Devils striker took aim at the English star after a 0-0 draw against Sunderland.

The 27-year-old started his first game under Michael Carrick in the dissapointing stalemate at the Stadium of Light. He struggled to impress in midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

It’s been a difficult spell for Mount at Old Trafford since arriving from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 in a £60m deal. He’s been hit by constant injury setbacks, making 70 appearances since his arrival.

Mason Mount’s Father Slams ‘Fool’ Owen

Owen analysed United’s draw against Sunderland and gave his verdict on Mount. He said:

“Mason Mount is working hard, but right now he’s not performing anywhere near the level Manchester United expected when they signed him.”

Mount’s father, Tony, responded to these comments on an Instagram post and pointed out his son’s lack of game time:

“Maybe not starting a game for five months has something to do with looking rusty Owen you fool.”

Mount has just returned from injury and completed just his second full 90 minutes in the Premier League last Saturday. He seemed to be a Ruben Amorim favourite during the Portuguese coach’s reign.

Carrick has preferred Mainoo in midfield alongside Casemiro with Bruno Fernandes ahead of them. His frustrating campaign has led to talk over his future ahead of the summer transfer window.

Mount’s Troubling Situation

What’s even worse is that Mount’s salary will increase following United’s UEFA Champions League qualification. He is reportedly set to earn £250,000 per week as of next season.

Mount has backed himself to succeed at Old Trafford despite his recurring fitness struggles. He told the BBC:

“I will always back myself. I know what I’m about and what I can bring. I love being a part of a massive club. It’s my third season and it’s flown.“

He added:

“I’m a bit older now and I’ve got a bit more experience. There are going to be a lot more games next season. Being a part of getting this club back to the top, where it deserves to be, is super special. I’ve had a little taste of winning something with the club, in the FA Cup. That was unbelievable. To do a Premier League? I can’t even imagine how special that would be.”

United are set for a midfield overhaul this summer ahead of Casemiro’s departure. As many as three new midfielders could arrive, and Manuel Ugarte’s future is in doubt.
