- Fabrizio Romano confirms Michael Carrick stays at Man Utd
- English coach deal sorted
- Carrick takes charge of Reds for next two seasons
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Michael Carrick will remain Manchester United‘s head coach on a permanent basis. It’s been expected for quite some time that Carrick will be handed the reins amid his current interim role.
The Italian journalist confirmed United’s decision to appoint Carrick in a post on X. He wrote:
“Michael Carrick will stay at Manchester United as permanent manager, confirmed. Direction clear for weeks, plan also approved by Sir Jim Ratfliffe and new deal set to be signed soon. New deal for 2 years plus option to extend or directly 3 years, but no doubts: Carrick says yes and will sign the contract.”
Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim as United head coach in January, signing a contract until the end of the season. He has guided the Reds to UEFA Champions League qualification, with 10 wins and two defeats in 15 games.

It’s Carrick
Carrick hasn’t just overseen a return to Europe’s elite club competition with a top-five finish. He has lifted the mood around Carrington with players loving life under him.
The 44-year-old had been tasked with steering a rocky ship out of a gloomy period but he’s achieved so much more. Most of his squad are firing on all cylinders, including Kobbie Mainoo, who he ensured returned to his status as a prominent member of the team.
Results have been quite simply excellent, including wins over Arsenal, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Liverpool. Performances haven’t been perfect, but it’s important to point out that Carrick took over a beleaguered side that finished 15th last season.
Romano’s report dropped just shortly after Carrick gave his pre-match press conference ahead of United’s clash with Nottingham Forest on Sunday. First question asked inevitably focused on his future:
“I can’t blame you for asking. There’s two games to go, apart from that there’s not much else to say, probably what you expect. The situation is pretty clear for us all. Same as in terms of preparing for the game.”
“The probably what you expect” line from that response is the perfect way to describe fans’ reaction to the breaking news. He has been the frontrunner for over three months and acknowledged last week that “clarity is important.”
With Carrick’s future now secured the club can fully focus on building a squad that can compete next season. He is already having a say in the recruitment ahead of an important summer transfer window.
