- Man Utd must sell Mason Mount
- Ex-Chelsea star has stuttered
- Reds should even cut ties at low fee
Manchester United are set for a busy summer transfer window and Mason Mount’s future is a major talking point. The English midfielder has struggled to reach expectations since arriving from Chelsea in the summer of 2023.
Mount joined the Red Devils in a £60m deal after failing to agree on a new contract with the west Londoners. He arrived off the back of a dissapointing campaign at Stamford Bridge.
Still, the talent was obvious, a clever playmaker who could open up teams with his impressive passing range and also find the back of the net. He played a key role in helping Thomas Tuchel guide the Blues to the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2021.
Mount’s Mountain to Climb
Mount has stumbled at United, unable to get a run of games under his belt due to recurring injuries. He’s appeared just 70 times since joining the club in July 2023.
The 27-year-old doesn’t have a place in Michael Carrick’s starting lineup even when fit. There’s no chance of him displacing Bruno Fernandes and he doesn’t have the profile to sit in midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo.
According to SunSport, Mount is “determined to stay”, and he’s “fully dedicated to reviving his United career.” The problem is his Old Trafford spell hasn’t really started.
Mount has put in some promising displays, including in last season’s Europa League semi-final win over Athletic Bilbao. But injury setbacks have been a major issue and he hasn’t exactly done enough to suggest he’s worth keeping especially with his salary reportedly expected to rise to £250,000 following Champions League qualification.
United must cut their losses and look to offload the Englishman this summer. That might mean selling for a low fee, but his wages, along with his unavailability, mean he’s another failed signing.
INEOS, fortunately, can highlight that they had no say over his arrival. His signing came under Erik ten Hag who was given control in the transfer market.
Time to Sale
Mount’s acquisition remains a mystery, given Fernandes is the obvious starting number 10. He doesn’t have the pace to be effective on the wing in this United team.
The player’s father, Tony, recently came out and slammed Michael Owen for criticising his son. The legendary former Premier League striker claimed that he hadn’t done enough in a Red Devils shirt.
Tony Mount’s argument centred on a lack of starts this season. You can’t start a player who isn’t fit, and his performances have warranted using him in the starting lineup.
Aston Villa and Fulham were linked with Mount earlier this season, and a sale is best for all involved. He can try to get his career back on track at a club where he’ll be granted more opportunities.
