- Man Utd set to announce Michael Carrick
- Gary Neville and Roy Keane have doubts
- Rio Ferdinand insists Carrick won’t care
Rio Ferdinand insists Michael Carrick won’t take notice of the likes of Roy Keane and Gary Neville when he takes charge of Manchester United on a permanent basis. The Red Devils are expected to soon announce the appointment of the club’s legendary former midfielder.
Carrick has been coaching United on an interim basis since January, when he replaced Ruben Amorim. He’s been a huge success thus far, guiding the team back to UEFA Champions League nights.
While most of the Old Trafford faithful support the 44-year-old, several of his former colleagues aren’t showing much loyalty. There has been a strange negativity shown towards the Englishman by even his ex-teammates, Neville and Paul Scholes.

“Carrick will not give a s***” – Ferdinand
Ferdinand has backed Carrick throughout his time in the dugout and believes he’s the right man for the permanent job. The club’s iconic former defender has given his thoughts on some of his former teammates taking aim at the head coach (via Rio Meets):
“Michael Carrick will not give a s*** about what Gary Neville or Roy Keane says. When he was a player, any comments, any negativity, good or bad comments, were like water off a duck’s back. Just brushed it aside, he knew what he was good at, he knew what he wanted to do and just carried on doing it, and I don’t think he’ll be any different as a manager.”
Ferdinand’s comments come after Carrick oversaw United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Keane said he still has doubts over the manager following the game, a recurring view he’s given ever since the English coach returned to the Theatre of Dreams.
Neville has been less scathing but still not fully on board with Carrick becoming the permanent head coach. He has started to rile up supporters with his negativity, which was on display during the Forest win.
Scholes is another one who has deemed his former teammate not right for the job. He claimed on The Overlap a week ago that all his ex-midfield partner has done is put players in their right positions.
Fans are sick of the toxicity
Anyone is free to speak their mind and give their opinion on United. That includes club legends who know what it takes to be a success at Old Trafford.
That said, the likes of Neville, Keane and Scholes haven’t just assessed Carrick and his coaching credentials. They have come across as bitter and unnecessarily taken digs at someone with whom two of them shared a dressing room.
When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge of United on a caretaker basis, all three talked the Norweigan up for the permanent gig. It’s strange to see them, particularly Scholes, so put off by Carrick.
