Manchester United have reportedly set their sights on Michael Carrick’s former Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney. The Englishman is likely to be on the move this summer after Boro missed out on Premier League promotion.

According to Scott Wilson of the Northern Echo, United are viewing Hackney as a long-term investment. A potential pursuit is driven by Carrick, who helped the 23-year-old develop at the Riverside Stadium.

The Red Devils aren’t the only Premier League club interested in signing him. There is a queue growing for the player’s signature ahead of the summer transfer window.

Man Utd join Hackney race

The report claims that Hackney looks certain to leave Boro and making the step up to the top-flight seems the most natural outcome. United are eyeing the 13-cap England U21 international along with Everton.

Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace are tipped to make a formal move for Hackney who has just one year left on his contract. He’s been a key man at the Riverside for several years and nearly helped Kim Hellberg’s men win the EFL Championship play-offs.

Boro suffered a 1-0 defeat in the final to Hull City at Wembley and the young English midfielder was in tears after the game. It looked like a send-off for the Redcar-born star.

Reports claim that Hackney is expected to cost around £25m. He has appeared 41 times across competitions this season, posting six goals and eight assists.

Why Carrick wants “humble” Hackney

Hackney was a crucial member of Carrick’s squad during his time in charge of Boro. He grew into one of the Championship’s most highly regarded midfielders.

Carrick spoke glowingly of Hackney and what he brought to the team. He said in 2024 (via Sports Illustrated):

“You couldn’t ask for much more from Hayden. He’s grounded, he’s humble, he’s down to earth and loves to learn. He loves the place and he loves the club as well. To have that, added with the talent he has got, it’s the perfect scenario.”

Hackney made 104 appearances under Carrick, scoring nine goals and providing as many assists. He could be a good option for United but cannot be viewed as one of the club’s top midfield signings.

There is a need to replace Casemiro and Aurelien Tchouameni is the dream for INEOS. The Reds are also closing in on the signing of Atalanta’s Ederson.
