Manchester United are reportedly advancing talks over West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with Jorge Mendes involved and the Hammers valuing the Portugal international at around £80million.
The 21-year-old has become one of the more significant names in United’s midfield search after West Ham’s relegation increased the pressure on the London club to raise funds this summer. Fernandes is also understood to have admirers elsewhere, but Old Trafford interest is now being framed as active rather than distant.
According to a fresh update from talkSPORT, United are in advanced negotiations with Mendes over Fernandes, who is valued at £80million by West Ham.
United midfield chase moves towards a key fee test
The price is the obvious sticking point. United have already been reshaping Michael Carrick’s midfield, and Fernandes would add Premier League experience, ball-carrying quality and long-term upside to that rebuild.
West Ham’s position is complicated by relegation and the need to balance the books, but Fernandes remains one of their most valuable assets after arriving from Southampton last summer.
For United, the attraction is clear. Fernandes fits the age profile of a signing who could develop with the side, yet the size of West Ham’s valuation means the next stage of talks will decide whether this becomes a serious bid or another expensive transfer trail that fades before deadline pressure builds.
