Mateus Fernandes has reportedly agreed personal terms with Manchester United as the club push to make the West Ham United midfielder their next summer signing.
The 21-year-old has become a live Old Trafford target after West Ham’s relegation, with United already reshaping their midfield around the impending arrival of Atalanta’s Ederson. United are now said to be moving towards Fernandes, although the deal is still not at club-to-club agreement stage.
According to Football365’s report on the Fernandes talks, sources have indicated personal terms are in place and progress is being made towards a wider agreement. The major sticking point remains West Ham’s fee expectation, with the Hammers understood to be holding out for a major return on a player they signed from Southampton last summer.
Fernandes Fee Still Defines The Deal
That leaves United with a familiar transfer-window equation: the player side appears manageable, but the selling club still controls the speed of the deal.
Fernandes would give Michael Carrick another technical midfield option, particularly if United move on from Casemiro and reassess Manuel Ugarte’s role. He is also young enough to fit the club’s longer-term rebuild rather than simply patching a short-term gap.
For now, the update is significant but not definitive. United have seemingly cleared one hurdle, yet West Ham’s valuation means this remains a negotiation rather than a transfer on the brink of completion.
