Felix Nmecha would prefer to join Manchester United over Newcastle United if he leaves Borussia Dortmund this summer.
However, Newcastle do not appear to have the strongest hand because Nmecha is understood to favour a move to one of England’s traditional giants.
That gives United a useful transfer edge, even if this is not yet a simple deal to complete. Dortmund do not want to lose Nmecha cheaply, and wider reports have placed several major clubs around the 25-year-old.
United’s midfield search takes them to Nmecha
The Nmecha line matters because United’s midfield rebuild is already stretching across several tracks.
ReadManUtd has already covered why the Mateus Fernandes chase remains a key part of United’s planning, but Nmecha offers a different profile.
He brings Bundesliga experience, athletic range and the ability to carry the ball through midfield.
Sky Sports has also reported Newcastle’s interest in Nmecha, with the Magpies assessing alternatives amid uncertainty around their own midfield.
For United, the preference claim is useful but not decisive. It helps if the race becomes a straight choice with Newcastle, but Dortmund’s valuation will still shape the deal.
The real question is whether United view Nmecha as a priority or a leverage option while they test other midfield targets. Either way, his reported preference gives Old Trafford a stronger position than St James’ Park for now.
And finally, Germany’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup could also accelerate a potential transfer, so Manchester United can now move quickly if they decide the towering midfielder is a transfer priority.
