Matheus Cunha Returns To Manchester United After Brazil World Cup Exit

Matheus Cunha’s World Cup campaign is over after Brazil were beaten 2-1 by Norway in a major last-16 shock.

Manchester United’s official site confirmed Brazil’s exit after the defeat at MetLife Stadium, while The Guardian reported that Erling Haaland’s late double sent Norway into their first World Cup quarter-final.

For United, the immediate significance is not only the result. Brazil’s early knockout gives Michael Carrick a clearer recovery and reintegration window before pre-season sharpens.

Cunha had built momentum earlier in the tournament, as ReadManUtd covered in its look at United’s Brazil workload picture. That issue now moves from tournament tracking to club management.

Carrick Gets Cunha Back Earlier Than Expected

United’s attack is being rebuilt around repeatable intensity, not isolated tournament moments.

Cunha returning earlier than Brazil expected allows Carrick’s staff to manage his physical drop-off, assess his role with Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, and avoid rushing him straight from international disappointment into another workload spike.

The defeat also gives United a useful emotional read. Brazil’s night ended painfully, with Neymar scoring late and still falling short, but Cunha’s tournament showed enough aggression and carrying threat to keep his Old Trafford stock intact.

The task now is turning that into club rhythm.

Carrick does not need a statement from Cunha in the first friendly. He needs controlled signs: sharp pressing, clean combinations and a quick understanding with the other forwards United are building around.

Brazil’s exit hurts the player, but it helps the club calendar. United now have one of their key attackers back earlier, with enough time to shape his role before the Champions League season begins.
