Andrey Santos’ £50m Arrival Gives Manchester United Midfield Answer

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has finally gained momentum. Andrey Santos now has permission to undergo a medical after United agreed a £50m deal with Chelsea.

United have spent the summer searching for midfield reinforcements. Santos now looks set to become one of Michael Carrick’s key additions.

He is not the biggest name United chased. But he fits a clear need.

David Ornstein reports via The Athletic that United have agreed a deal worth £48m plus £2m in add-ons. Chelsea will also keep a 10% sell-on clause.

Fabrizio Romano has given the move his “here we go” confirmation. Santos has also received permission to complete his medical.

Nothing becomes official until United announce it. But the key parts now point in one direction. Personal terms are in place, the fee has been agreed and the medical is next.

ReadManUtd has already covered how United agreed the £50m deal for Santos after stepping up their midfield search. This now looks like a deal moving into its final stage.

Why Santos Fits Carrick’s Midfield

Santos gives United more energy, power and aggression in midfield.

The 22-year-old can win the ball, carry through pressure and cover ground. Those qualities have been missing from United’s midfield for too long.

Carrick has needed more legs in central areas. United also need players who can grow with the rebuild, not just patch short-term gaps.

The Tchouameni route has effectively closed. Real Madrid want to keep the Frenchman, and ReadManUtd has already looked at how Madrid’s stance blocked United’s move for Aurelien Tchouameni.

Santos is not the same established name. He also does not bring the same wage burden. That makes the deal easier to justify, even at £50m.

Chelsea still rate him. Their sell-on clause shows that clearly. But Santos needs regular football now, and United can offer him that pathway.

He could play as a ball-winning No 8. He could also form part of a younger, more athletic midfield if United complete a deal for Ederson.

The fee still carries pressure. United are not buying a low-cost prospect. They are paying for potential, Premier League readiness and the belief that Santos can start quickly.

But this does not feel like a panic move. It looks like a profile-led signing for a position United had to address.

The ReadManUtd Verdict

This is the type of signing United needed.

Santos is young, physical and ready for a bigger role. He also arrives with a clear point to prove after leaving Chelsea.

Carrick still needs balance around him. Santos will not fix United’s midfield alone. The club should still push for another option if the right deal opens.

But this move gives United something they lacked: a midfielder with energy, bite and room to develop.

The medical is now the final major step. If Santos comes through it, United will have landed a player who can help now and grow into the next version of the team.

After a slow summer chase, Carrick finally has a midfield deal moving the right way.
