Man Utd make enquiry to sign versatile Inter Milan star

Manchester United made an enquiry for Inter Milan defender Carlos Augusto in late April as part of their search for another left-sided option.

Ben Jacobs has revealed that United contacted the Serie A club to explore the conditions of a possible summer deal.

Augusto can play at left-back, left centre-back or wing-back. He has also operated further forward and could provide emergency cover in midfield.

Jacobs told The United Stand: “I’ve heard that Manchester United made an enquiry actually in April for Carlos Augusto.”

The report carrying Jacobs’ comments does not suggest United have submitted a formal offer or entered advanced negotiations with Inter.

Augusto could offer Carrick valuable cover

Augusto’s versatility explains why United have included him in their wider full-back search.

Michael Carrick currently has Patrick Dorgu and Luke Shaw as options on the left, although Shaw’s injury record continues to create uncertainty.

United have also monitored Neco Williams and Lewis Hall. As Read Man Utd recently examined, Carrick appears to want a dependable defender capable of covering several positions.

Augusto would provide a different profile.

The Brazil international is left-footed, comfortable in a back three and experienced in high-level European football. His ability to move into midfield could also help Carrick change shape during matches.

The 27-year-old remains under contract with Inter until 2028, which leaves the Italian club in a strong negotiating position. Inter have also considered offering him improved terms following another season of regular involvement.

United’s enquiry took place several months ago and there is no indication that talks have progressed since.

However, Augusto’s name adds another option to a growing shortlist as Carrick looks to improve the balance and durability of his defence.
