Manchester United could submit an offer for Roma midfielder Manu Koné from Monday as Michael Carrick pushes to complete his midfield rebuild.
United are reportedly leading the race for the France international following competition from Chelsea and Liverpool.
According to Corriere dello Sport, as reported by the Manchester Evening News, Roma are preparing for an approach once Koné’s World Cup commitments have ended. The Italian club reportedly want more than €50m, worth around £43m, before considering a sale.
Koné asked his representatives not to hold transfer negotiations during France’s World Cup campaign. Their run ended with defeat against England in Saturday’s third-place play-off, potentially clearing the way for talks from Monday, 20 July.
United have already made contact with the midfielder’s representatives. ReadManUtd previously covered Fabrizio Romano’s confirmation of discussions with Koné’s agents, although Roma had not received a formal bid at that stage.
Koné could complete Carrick’s midfield rebuild
Carrick has already added Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to his midfield. However, United still want another player capable of adding athleticism, defensive coverage and powerful ball-carrying.
Koné offers those qualities. The 25-year-old can regain possession, cover large areas and drive through pressure, giving United a different profile alongside Santos and Tielemans.
United’s interest has also increased since the proposed Ederson transfer collapsed following further medical checks. Roma’s valuation means Koné would represent another major investment, but the money reserved for Ederson remains available.
Chelsea and Liverpool could still provide competition, while Roma have little reason to accept a reduced offer following Koné’s World Cup performances.
United appear ready to move first. An offer could arrive during the coming days, although Roma’s response will determine whether Carrick can secure his third midfield signing of the summer.
