Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has been the defining thread of their summer, and the latest word from Fabrizio Romano suggests the work is far from finished.
United have already reshaped the engine room this window, completing a £83m double swoop for Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. Two arrivals of that calibre would normally signal a job done, yet events of the past week have made clear that Old Trafford’s recruitment team are still active in the market.
The collapse of the Ederson deal changed the picture. Fabrizio Romano reported on his YouTube channel that the move for the Atalanta midfielder was off, leaving United to pivot to alternatives with pre-season already underway.
Michael Carrick is targeting a third midfielder to complete the rebuild, and the club’s search for that final piece has thrown up several names over the past fortnight. Now, one of them has moved to the front of the queue.
Michael Carrick’s midfield search takes a fresh turn
According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United executives have held a phone call with the representatives of Roma midfielder Manu Koné. Romano says the relationship between Koné’s agents and United is excellent, but stresses that Roma have not yet received a formal approach from the club.
Speaking on his YouTube channel earlier this week, as carried by CaughtOffside, Romano explained that United “made a call to the agents of Manu Kone from Roma”, describing the Frenchman as “one of the players they appreciate” and confirming: “There was a call over the recent days.”
That distinction matters. Direct contact with a player’s camp is a deliberate first step, but Romano’s reporting is equally clear that no bid has landed in Rome, and United have made no commitment to turning admiration into an offer.
Could Manu Koné really be Man Utd’s next signing?
The fit is easy to see. Koné is a powerful, ball-carrying midfielder who has just helped France reach the World Cup semi-finals, and he brings a more defensive-minded, physical profile than Tielemans to a midfield still taking shape. At 25, he also matches the age bracket United have targeted all summer.
The obstacles are just as real. Football Italia note that Roma blocked a move to Inter last summer worth around €45m, and they are unlikely to accept less for the 25-year-old now. United would also not be alone in the race, with a Chelsea move already complicating the pursuit.
The verdict? This is credible groundwork rather than an imminent deal. Romano’s reporting confirms genuine intent — clubs do not ring agents of players they merely admire from a distance — but until a formal offer reaches Roma, Koné remains one strong option among several. With United’s pre-season schedule about to intensify, expect a decision on whether to escalate within days rather than weeks.
