Manchester United have reportedly received encouragement in their pursuit of Lewis Hall, with the Newcastle United defender preferring an Old Trafford move over a return to Chelsea.
Michael Carrick has identified Hall as his leading left-back option as he continues reshaping his squad ahead of the new season.
Chelsea are also monitoring their former academy defender. Xabi Alonso needs another specialist option following Marc Cucurella’s departure for Real Madrid.
However, TEAMtalk reports that Hall views the opportunity to join United and work under Carrick as particularly attractive. The 21-year-old is reportedly prepared to compete with Luke Shaw before eventually becoming the club’s long-term first-choice left-back.
Hall preference strengthens United position
ReadManUtd previously explained why Carrick has made Hall his leading defensive target, with United seeking both immediate competition and a long-term successor to Shaw.
Hall’s reported preference could strengthen United’s position if they open formal negotiations. It does not, however, remove the largest obstacle.
Newcastle reportedly value the England international at around £60m and have little reason to sell. Hall is under contract until 2029 and has developed into an important member of their squad.
His versatility explains United’s interest. Hall can operate as a traditional left-back, move into midfield during possession or play further forward as a wing-back.
The proposed move could also allow Patrick Dorgu to feature in a more attacking role. Carrick is reportedly seeking a specialist defender rather than relying entirely on players whose strongest qualities come higher up the pitch.
United must now decide whether Hall’s age, Premier League experience and long-term potential justify Newcastle’s valuation.
Chelsea’s interest adds competition, but the player’s reported preference gives Carrick an important advantage. The next step rests with United and whether they are prepared to turn sustained interest into an offer.
