A few decades ago, it was Real Madrid who used to sign Manchester United’s best players. But that situation has turned on its head over the past decade or so as Premier League teams have grown further while Los Blancos have tightened their purse strings.
We have seen Manchester United sign players like Angel Di Maria, Casemiro and Raphael Varane directly from Real Madrid. Now, could they look to repeat that trick in this summer window as well?
One area where Manchester United will be looking to improve is their midfield. They have already brought in a couple of fresh faces there.
The club have signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. But the club will be looking for a more defensive-minded option as well, following the departure of Casemiro. And it looks like another Real Madrid player is now on their radar to solve that problem position.
Manchester United want Real Madrid midfielder
According to Samuel Luckhurst, Manchester United have enquired about Aurelien Tchouameni. The club are not deterred by reports that he has agreed a new extension at Real Madrid and there hasn’t been a formal announcement yet.
Jose Mourinho planned on keeping Tchouameni, but the Rodri to Real Madrid links have ramped up since Spain won the World Cup.
Tchouameni has been linked with a move away to Real Madrid for years for some reason, but has always remained involved at Santiago Bernabeu.
But following some of the events that took place last season, the chances of Real Madrid agreeing to part with the Frenchman might have potentially increased this summer.
Is Tchouameni a realistic target?
It remains to be seen if Manchester United are able to sign Tchouameni or not. At the end of the day, it might all depend on Rodri and what the future holds for him.
Rodri is 30 years of age though. Would Real Madrid be willing to let go of someone four years younger, just to sign him, especially with the number of injury problems the Spaniard has faced lately?
It could happen, especially if Real Madrid are keen on finding Tchouameni a new home in the first place. There are a lot of moving parts in this move, that is for sure.
Manchester United will surely continue to monitor the situation. But at the same time, with the new season not far away, they cannot allow this to drag on for much longer either.
