Michael Carrick search for an experienced striker to support Benjamin Sesko has led them to Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.
Dusan Vlahovic has also emerged as a possible alternative following his Juventus departure.
The i Paper reports that United have monitored Watkins for an extended period. However, Aston Villa are unlikely to accept a fee within the range the Old Trafford club currently considers realistic.
Ollie Watkins Manchester United move depends on Zirkzee
United’s forward search is closely connected to Joshua Zirkzee’s future.
Juventus, Roma and Como are interested in the Netherlands international. ReadManUtd reported that United will consider suitable offers, although they are not actively forcing him out.
The club would require another centre-forward if Zirkzee departed. Sesko remains central to Carrick’s plans, but United want proven support rather than placing the entire scoring burden on the Slovenian.
Watkins would provide substantial Premier League experience and the ability to attack space behind opposing defences. He can also lead the press and operate alongside another striker when Carrick wants to change shape.
Former United midfielders Nicky Butt and Owen Hargreaves both backed a move for Watkins last year. Their comments were made after United signed Sesko rather than in response to the latest report.
Butt said he would have preferred “an experienced striker” capable of protecting younger forwards during difficult periods.
Hargreaves also questioned why United had not added a proven Premier League option after recruiting Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Both identified Watkins as the type of player United required. Football365 has carried their comments alongside the latest transfer update.
Vlahovic represents a financially different option because he is available without a transfer fee. However, his salary and reported interest from Barcelona could complicate negotiations.
United have not made an official offer for Watkins. A move is expected to depend on Zirkzee leaving and Villa reducing their demands.
