Bruno Fernandes has sent a two-word message to Mason Mount after the midfielder impressed in Manchester United’s 2-1 pre-season victory over Atletico Madrid. Mount continued his encouraging summer under Michael Carrick in Stockholm before receiving public backing from the United captain.
Bryan Mbeumo scored twice as United came from behind to win the Snapdragon Cup at the Strawberry Arena.
Mount started alongside new signing Andrey Santos in a deeper midfield role and completed the full 90 minutes as Carrick continued experimenting with his options before the new season.
Afterwards, Mount shared a post on Instagram reflecting on the victory.
Fernandes responded simply: “My guy.”
The Manchester Evening News reports that Fernandes’ message came after another positive Mount performance as the 27-year-old attempts to establish a significant role in Carrick’s plans.
Mason Mount giving Manchester United something to think about
Mount’s ability has rarely been the major question since his £60million arrival from Chelsea.
Availability has been the bigger problem.
Injuries have repeatedly interrupted his United career, but a full pre-season has given Carrick the opportunity to assess him in a different role.
Mount has spent significant periods playing deeper alongside Santos rather than operating exclusively behind the striker.
That could become particularly interesting as United continue considering whether to sign a third central midfielder.
Mount was heavily involved against Atletico and created three chances while helping United control possession through midfield.
His performance was not the only positive from Stockholm.
ReadManUtd highlighted on Saturday how Shea Lacey has given Carrick a selection problem after another impressive pre-season display, with several players using the summer to strengthen their first-team claims.
United still have friendlies against Paris Saint-Germain, Leeds United and AC Milan before their Premier League campaign begins.
Mount therefore has three more opportunities to prove that Carrick may already have another midfield solution within his squad.
Fernandes certainly appeared impressed by what he saw.
