Man Utd captain confirms major priority for Marc Skinner replacement

Maya Le Tissier says youth development will form a major part of the brief for the next Manchester United Women head coach. United are moving quickly to replace Marc Skinner after his five-year spell ended by mutual agreement on Monday.

Skinner left only a month before the new Women’s Super League season begins. United have already completed background checks on potential successors and expect to make an appointment quickly.

ReadManUtd reported on Monday that United had started searching for Skinner’s replacement. The club want their next coach to embrace a younger squad and provide a clearer pathway into the first team.

Manchester United Women head coach must develop youth

Speaking to reporters following Skinner’s departure, Le Tissier said United had made their direction clear.

“I think the club have been pretty clear with what they’ve said, bringing through the youth,” the captain said. “They’ve always done that historically.”

Ella Toone also outlined the qualities she wants from the next manager. The England midfielder wants someone capable of improving young players while managing the experienced members of the squad and delivering attacking football.

United’s plans extend beyond simply promoting academy talent. The club have told players they still intend to add a centre-back and left-winger before the new season as part of a more sustainable recruitment model.

Le Tissier and Toone stressed that they still want to compete for major honours. Both players also praised Skinner, who led United to four cup finals and won the Women’s FA Cup in 2024.

Neither player has taken part in discussions over his successor. However, Le Tissier expects the club’s ambitions to become clear once the new Manchester United Women head coach arrives.
