Patrice Evra has surprisingly advised Manchester United target Manu Kone to choose Arsenal if he leaves Roma this summer.
United have been considering another midfielder despite already adding Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos during Michael Carrick’s first summer in charge.
Kone has emerged as one of the options under consideration after an impressive World Cup with France.
However, former United defender Evra believes Arsenal would be the better destination for the 25-year-old.
Speaking on BBC Sounds, Evra backed Kone to succeed in the Premier League but advised his compatriot to choose the Emirates Stadium over Old Trafford.
Manu Kone remains on Manchester United radar
Evra’s verdict is particularly eye-catching given his long association with United.
The Frenchman spent eight successful years at Old Trafford and won five Premier League titles, as well as the Champions League in 2008.
United’s interest in Kone is also more substantial than a passing transfer rumour.
Carrick still has decisions to make over whether another midfielder is required, especially after Mason Mount impressed in a deeper role during pre-season.
ReadManUtd recently looked at how Mount’s resurgence could influence United’s remaining midfield business, although another athletic option is still being considered.
Kone would certainly fit that profile.
The Roma midfielder combines physicality with the ability to carry possession through midfield and enhanced his reputation during France’s World Cup campaign.
Roma have reportedly valued him at around £51million, while Arsenal have also been linked with a move.
There is no suggestion that Kone is currently close to joining either club.
Even so, hearing one of United’s most recognisable former players advise a transfer target to pick Arsenal instead is unlikely to go unnoticed at Old Trafford.
