United’s Summer Window: Six In, Twelve Out
When Cristian Orozco was confirmed as Manchester United’s sixth signing of the summer window this week, it drew a line under one of the busiest off-seasons Old Trafford has seen in years. Michael Carrick’s first full pre-season in charge has been shaped as much by the paperwork as by the pitch, with director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada reshaping the squad from front to back.
The scale of the churn is striking. Six players have arrived and around a dozen have moved on — a deliberate reset designed to trim a bloated wage bill and hand Carrick a leaner, younger group for United’s return to the Champions League. Here is how the business has broken down: every confirmed arrival, and every notable departure.
Who United signed in the summer window
United’s incoming business came in a mid-July rush. Andrey Santos arrived from Chelsea on 13 July in a reported £48m deal, with goalkeeper Karl Darlow following a day later on a free transfer from Leeds United. Youri Tielemans also completed his move from Aston Villa on 14 July for a reported £35m — a signing Goal.com wondered might prove one of the buys of the season. Tottenham forward Tynan Thompson (20 July) and goalkeeper Kit Margetson from Swansea City (27 July) strengthened the development ranks, before Orozco, an 18-year-old midfielder from Fortaleza, was confirmed by the club on 7 August for an undisclosed fee.
It is recruitment with a clear logic: a blend of ready-made quality in Santos and Tielemans and long-term promise in Thompson, Margetson and Orozco, all overseen by Wilcox’s recruitment department.
The dozen who left Old Trafford
The exits tell the other half of the story. Rasmus Højlund’s switch to Napoli was made permanent, while veteran Casemiro departed before joining Inter Miami. Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia were released as free agents, young defender Tyler Fredricson moved to Lausanne-Sport, and academy trio Sonny Aljofree, James Bailey and Malachi Sharpe were also let go.
There was plenty of movement on loan, too. Goalkeeper André Onana joined Trabzonspor for the season, midfielder Sékou Koné also headed to Lausanne-Sport, and youngsters Solomon Honor (Southport) and Elyh Harrison (Greenock Morton) left in search of first-team minutes.
Add it up and it is six in and twelve out — a net reduction that says everything about United’s intent to reshape rather than simply expand.
With the shape of Carrick’s squad now largely settled, attention turns back to the grass: a glamour friendly with Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, then a Premier League opener away at Hull City on 22 August. The window does not shut until around 1 September, so there may be late twists, but the heavy lifting looks done. Follow the rest of United’s summer transfer business with us.
