Man Utd make enquiry for £30m defender as Carrick targets left-back solution

Manchester United have reportedly made an enquiry for Club Brugge defender Joaquin Seys as Michael Carrick considers strengthening at left-back before the transfer window closes.

The 21-year-old has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs after establishing himself in Belgium and featuring at this summer’s World Cup.

SunSport reports that United have asked about Seys’ availability, with Arsenal and Aston Villa also making enquiries.

Club Brugge are reportedly looking for around €35million (£30m) and are under no immediate pressure to sell because Seys has three years remaining on his contract.

Joaquin Seys emerges as new Man Utd left-back option

Left-back has been an area United have considered strengthening throughout the summer.

Luke Shaw remains Carrick’s senior option, while Harry Amass has been given opportunities during pre-season.

ReadManUtd reported on Sunday that United had identified the position as one they would like to strengthen, with Newcastle unwilling to entertain their interest in Lewis Hall.

Seys now represents another possible route.

The Belgium international progressed through Club Brugge’s academy before becoming a regular member of their senior squad.

Club Brugge list him primarily as a defender who developed as a flank player after progressing from their Under-18 side into Club NXT.

His ability to operate on the left and contribute in possession has attracted interest beyond United, with Newcastle, Benfica and Porto also reportedly monitoring his situation.

There is no suggestion yet that United have made an offer.

The enquiry does, however, provide another indication that Carrick and the recruitment team are assessing alternatives at left-back before the window closes.

Whether United are prepared to meet Club Brugge’s valuation may determine if their interest develops further.
