Manchester United have reportedly revived their interest in Adam Wharton as Michael Carrick continues to assess whether his midfield requires another major addition.
The Crystal Palace midfielder has been linked with United for much of the year, but their pursuit appeared to have cooled following the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
That situation may now have changed.
CaughtOffside reports that United remain active in the race for Wharton, although Palace’s valuation of around €100million (£86m) remains a major obstacle.
Chelsea are also said to be stepping up their interest, while Real Madrid continue to monitor the England international.

United have already made significant changes to Carrick’s midfield this summer.
Santos has impressed throughout pre-season, while Tielemans made his first appearance during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain.
ReadManUtd’s analysis of the PSG draw highlighted how Tielemans provides Carrick with another player capable of controlling possession from deeper areas.
Wharton would offer another variation.
The 22-year-old is comfortable receiving possession under pressure and progressing the ball from deep, qualities which could complement the athleticism Santos provides alongside him.
United’s interest is reportedly being influenced by Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s injury, although there is no suggestion that an offer has been submitted.
Palace are also in a strong negotiating position.
Their reported €100m valuation means United would have to make Wharton one of the most expensive signings in their history to complete a deal at the current asking price.
Chelsea’s involvement provides another complication.
United may therefore have to decide whether Wharton is sufficiently important to Carrick’s plans to justify another significant midfield investment, or whether the progress of Santos, Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo makes such a move unnecessary.
For now, their interest appears to be alive again.
Turning that interest into negotiations would require a considerably bigger decision.
